from what i recall the morph required the human and monster models to have identical topology - each face and vertex of the human model needed to have an equivalent in the necromorph model in order to pull off the transformation convincingly i understand why FFXIV did things the way it did
Dead Space 2 does such a transformation "legitimately" and from what i understand it was a nightmare to pull off one of the first things you see in the game is someone viscerally transformed into one of the Necromorph monsters right in front of you
the camera pans around her back, and the arm is finished fusing when it comes back around to her front or rather, they swap models during the pan, and the back view conceals what would've otherwise been an obvious switch it's still an impressive (and imposing) intro to the fight, though!
one of my favorite bits in FFXIV is the intro cutscene for the final boss of the Puppet's Bunker raid, where we see a bunch of featureless robot marionettes fuse together into a giant version of a certain character the fusion is STILL HAPPENING when the sequence starts; her left arm isn't finished
sitting here realizing it'd be damn hard to do a thing like that convincingly in 3D
oh that's interesting, the melting animation is frame-by-frame up to a point and then the last frame just gets shrunk vertically until it's gone

and yes, some games do use internal compression sometimes you'll crack open a ROM or an ISO and find graphics and text data, and it'll be in a clear, non-obfuscated standard format! but games can and do compress shit to save space, especially in the cartridge years, and decompression is non-trivial
decompiling retail games still takes heckin' work it's why the tools released for compiling N64 games as native binaries don't mean that suddenly every single N64 game is available as a native binary - that shit needs to be broken down, traced, and analyzed
