All this despite 0 support from our mayor and school chancellor. It’s smaller scale, but if we work together find solutions that meet our community’s needs, we don’t have to blame parents for society’s failings.
Despite great personal risk, many immigrant parents still want their kids to attend school, and since many of us lived through 18 months of closures, we get it and are trying to make that happen as safely as possible.
Re the next pandemic response: DC, where I live, is currently undergoing an education crisis in that many immigrant families are afraid to take or even send their kids to school with others because the goons are literally waiting outside their homes to abduct them.
The people I know who were radicalized parenting during COVID have actually become radical feminists. It’s facile to lump together those of us who wanted schools to open sooner and the lessons we took from our experience.
Ok but the number of people who were radicalized rightward by this experience is likely very small, if loud. And saying “you must hate your kids because you want them to go to school and you don’t care about people dying for them to do so” is not only untrue but further polarizing

Stopped on my way to Soulcycle to record an HSI, Park Police, and MPD arrest downtown, and some HSI guys waited until they were in their unmarked car to tell me to smile more.

Around 5pm today, HSI and Park Police were conducting an arrest in downtown DC. Residents gathered around them to record, and when one tried to ask the guy being arrested what he was being accused of, a Park Police officer shoved him back and told him to stay 8 feet away.

It’s ok that you don’t understand. I wouldn’t wish my experience on another. But it makes sense that villainizing mothers could turn them away. It didn’t turn me away, but it certainly opened my eyes wider to how women’s unpaid labor serves both to prop up society and as a scapegoat.
I think it’s the “kids I hate” thing that is the least fair. I love my kids. I love spending time with my kids. I hate the system that forced me to be FT caregiver, SpEd teacher and speech/physical/occupational therapist to 2 ADHD preschoolers for 18 mo in addition to my FT job.
Can I ask tho why you see this as a zero sum game? It’s not a suffering competition. Trucks of dead people are fucking awful. Millions of kids falling behind in school and parents pushed to the brink are also awful.

Thanks. It was brutal. I love my kids, I love spending time with them. I want folks to be vaxxed and masked and as safe as possible. The experience didn't push me to the right, in the slightest. At the same time, DC could probably have safely opened schools 9 months earlier than it did.

All while I was working nights and weekends with USAID to help kids in other countries around the world go back in school in person, many months before my own kids had the chance.
I'm not griping about it because it's not socially acceptable to do so. It was a deeply traumatizing year and a half, for so many reasons. My kids didn't sleep through the night, they weren't yet dx'd and no access to in-person OT/PT/ST, they had physical and speech and other developmental delays...
I think it matters a lot how long the schools in your area were closed, how old your kids were, whether they had any special needs, and whether you were expected to do a full time job while they were home. I'm still pissed (2 preschool kids with ADHD, schools closed 18 months, FT+ job).
Please talk to some Black people before dismissing the psychological impact of having Feds running around the neighborhood hemming people up en masse.

In 1984 I spent a day in East Berlin, and an image that has always stuck with me were the police armed with SMGs who were standing on the catwalk above the train platform back to the West. And now, I get to see the same image, but in a DC metro station. Do we want to live in East Berlin?
