My goal was to to build an open source RTS fan game for Battletech using an existing open source (CC-BY-NC-SA) asset library from another fan game. My problem came from trying to figure out the overall game architecture re OOP, data structures, etc.
It's hard to find mentors. I crashed out of my gamedev efforts because it was hard to find anyone teaching anything other than business/marketing/getting a "real" game dev job. For actual game development, the gulf of info between "student's first project" and "full indie release" is immense
