Gay icons used to be someone who was camp, someone who could be mimicked in drag, it's never really sat right with me that Kylie Minogue or Christina Aguilera would fit the bill to begin with. And now that one can make a living through The Gays, it's a strategy.
The brokenness, the messiness, the abjectness was always part of the package, and it doesn't carry over when there's a Pride circuit that can be a career. Zarah Leander, Tammy Faye Messner, Joan Rivers, Liberace, etc didn't have to be good people, because we weren't paying their salaries.
