I took this image at sunrise at Poolburn dam in Otago, New Zealand on new years day 2018. Poolburn dam is a landscape photographers wonderland if you strike the right conditions.
This ruru or New Zealand morepork posed quite patiently and undeterred by my presence. I got some of my best ruru images that day and I left him in peace just as I found him.
Close enough for a long lens however there is no substitute for getting close under any definition lol. I bought this illness with me from New Zealand. The NHS has a bad rep but the equivalent in NZ is much worse. Thanks to the UK NHS I now know what I have and how to manage it.
After about 4 months of being subjected to home detention due to health issues, I was able to put my camera bag on my back and accompany Rosie Fluerty on what we hope will be the start of our spring campaign. This Cormorant allowed me to approach close enough for a pretty descent photo.
In Ireland, mountain's and heather are a match made in heaven.

You only ever get to experience something for the first time, once. On a freezing cold July morning I got my first experience of Lake Matheson on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. The year was 2007 and I was on the first of what was to become many trips away with my camera.
At first there was nothing much in the way of clouds to set off a sunset but from out of nowhere some began to form and the light hit them. No matter how I process this image I can never convey what I saw that evening. I call this image “The day the aliens arrived in Kaikōura, New Zealand ”.

I call this image Desolation road, taken in Central Otago. This image showcase the cold and bleak conditions of the long winter months. A real testimony to the first settlers that endured such hardship that help turn New Zealand into a world leading powerhouse exporting wool and New Zealand lamb.
