Things starting with ‘M’ | 'Dinge die mit "M” beginnen ...' #FotoVorschlag #Photography #Museums #Renoir #art #Impressionists #Exhibit Modernism, back when a striped dress, theater box, and dance hall could scandalize the art world.🎨

A man in a dark suit is taking a photo on his iPhone of a painting by Renoir, “The Theater Box” (1874), shown at the original Paris salon exhibiting Impressionist art. The subject of the painting is a man and a woman dressed in fancy evening clothes seated in a theater stall at a dance hall. She’s wearing a white dress with black stripes going down the front; he’s got on a formal black jacket and is raising a pair of binoculars to his bearded face. One of the things that shocked viewers at the time was making the attendees rather than the stage the subject of the painting. National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (Sept. 2024)

Wonderful performance by Ralph Fiennes.🎬 My first Robert Harris book was Fatherland, which blew me away. I’ve liked almost everything by him. His latest - or the latest one I’ve read - V2 is an intriguing WWII story about a secret British mission in Belgium to thwart the Germans on the Dutch coast.🚀

High praise from le Carré! I liked Conclave a lot (better than the movie anyway). I’ve read so many Robert Harris books lately. The Second Sleep was a bold blend of historical fiction and futuristic sci-fi. Have you by any chance read it? #devonbookhour

I liked how the story tries to reconstruct the past through the eyes of a boy who witnessed it but without understanding it at the time. The past is kind of an enigma, which compels him to keep trying to explain it. #devonbookhour

Thoreau is kind of a bore. For me, Sterne was a let down. I get that Tristam Shandy is supposed to be a literary groundbreaker in narrative technique. But as a novel it failed to charm me into believing this is a life worth examining in such lavish, tedious autobiographical detail! #devonbookhour

Yes, I liked his earlier book, a chilling look at how Trump has been played by the Kremlin. It synthesizes lots of info that's already out there, hiding in plain sight, re: Trump's reliance on Russian money & what an unwitting asset (useful idiot) he’s been to Russian intelligence for so many years.

Book cover of “House of Trump, House of Putin: The Untold Story of Donald Trump and the Russian Mafia” by Craig Unger (pub. 2018) shows a Russian nesting doll with Putin inside Trump’s head when the top is lifted off.

Trump’s ties to the Russians actually go back to the 1980s when the Soviet Union was disintegrating & wealthy apparatchiks & mobsters needed a way to launder money. Trump offered the perfect solution, selling them luxury condos. In turn, the Russians bailed him out of $4 billion in debt. ROI: >100%!

A lot of people buy into the idea of living simply in a natural setting. He’d be pretty vocal now against an ‘unjust government’ & encouraging ‘civil disobedience’, I bet!

My cousins live in Chevy Chase. I used to live in Glen Echo if you’ve ever biked that far up the canal. Now I live in the city, on Capitol Hill. Politics aside, it’s a lovely place.📸💕

Nice! I’m a fan of canals, miss walking along the towpath between the B&O Canal & the Potomac! It ends (or starts) in Georgetown, but that’s not near where I live. What part of DC did you live in?🙋‍♀️

Yes, it is! I love old lighthouses. Here’s one that used to sit on a “knoll” in the Chesapeake Bay called Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse. Built in 1856, it’s now on a pier in Baltimore’s Inner Harbour.❤️

not much happening this side of the pond bookwise - still doing a fair amount of audiobook ‘reading’ - The Second Sleep by Robert Harris turned out to be fantastic. He constructs a plausible futuristic story that takes place in a post-Dark Ages England. It’s well voiced (the narrator is great).

Book cover of The Second Sleep, a historical novel by Robert Harris, shows a silhouette of a man on horseback riding toward a gothic church tower under midnight blue skies.

Wonderful! Who doesn’t love a good rose-rescue bush! The only roses I ever had came with the house, tall thorny canes over my head when we moved in. I cut them back, sure I’d killed them, but lo & behold they turned out to be a lovely pink rose that bloomed nonstop with the most heavenly scent.💕
