I've been watching the reaction on social media, and there are unfortunately a lot of positive tributes flowing in ... mostly from the generation that was on the giving end of his parenting techniques, not the receiving end.
When I think about all the attractive people I know who wouldn't know they were being flirted with if it hit them with a 2 x 4, and then this ... it just feels like the universe is chaos.

I remember when I was a kid thinking he was "moderate" because in our house we also had Gothard, the Pearls, et al. Returning to his work as an adult, I'm like, "This guy was EVERY BIT as bad as any of them." His fixation with violence was obvious and unapologetic.
I don't think any evangelical leader has harmed my little neurodivergent family as directly as James Dobson has. So I am mostly going to bite my tongue at the news of his death. I will say this: history will remember our hypocrisies, particularly those that harm our neighbors.
He's not bigger or stronger than anybody anymore. May God have mercy - and I mean that unironically - on his soul. But also, momento mori.
I don't rejoice at his death, as an individual. But I rejoice that God cuts the days of sinners short. James Dobson built a parenting empire on the idea that parents should say, "I can and should impose my will on you because I'm bigger, stronger, older."
There are probably people who should mourn James Dobson's death ... his family, friends, etc. But I didn't know the man. He was just the guy who helped my parents "dare to discipline," and told them that "breaking their child's will" through violent coercion was "parenting God's way."

I'm almost through this book and BOY is it depressing to consider the historical precedents long in place in our government, for responding to peaceful protesters with violence. And the tendency of the public to pretend not to notice in the interest of "law and order."

Oh yes - I firmly believe this generation is worse than the Gothard generation. Gothard tried harder to *seem* nice. These guys go out of their way to make sure everyone knows they're terrible people. Because terrible is good now??

But seriously folks: we don't come out of the womb with a fully-formed, 100% politically correct worldview. If you want people to change and grow, don't dump on them when they do.
The ones who didn't tended to be those that the system benefited, or who were comfortable bending the rules enough to make them bearable. But honestly I know so many people who have walked away as adults. More than not.
When George W took office I was thirteen, homeschooled, and being raised on a steady diet of Bill Gothard, James Dobson and Rush Limbaugh. So no, I didn't really have the frame of reference or a safe environment in which to deconstruct.

Protesting - especially sustained protesting over time - is a hassle. There's probably people who think it's a good time, but most of us would rather be doing nearly anything else, and we will gladly stop as soon as this administration stops BURNING THE COUNTRY TO THE GROUND.
It's my introverted husband's turn to protest tonight. He doesn't want to go; I don't want him to go. This would normally be family movie night, but instead he'll be hanging out with a bunch of strangers, I'll be solo parenting and we'll all be missing out on family time.

I would urge everyone, whether on the left or the right, to avoid using buzz-words unless you have a really, REALLY good reason. I just heard someone use the word "countenance" out of the blue (IYKYK) and I felt like I was interacting with the Borg.

There's a certain seductiveness for a man, in hearing a woman confirm his biases about women. Women understand this, and the less unscrupulous of us are willing to commercialize it.
The women I'm talking about aren't NOT complementarian, they just don't want to be pelted with sexism and gender propaganda every week.
It really burns me up how much emotional energy women that I know are spending trying to just live quiet lives in complementarian churches. I know, I know, "they should just leave," but it's never that simple. Churches should just stop being weird about gender roles.

This is the only way I can make sense of our political situation right now. People crave the catharsis of seeing someone punished. For that purpose it doesn't matter much if the person is actually guilty of anything.

Yeah I completely sympathize. I think there are valid uses and I try to use it in ways that help me find and properly compensate actual creators, but obvs not everyone will.
For better or wprse I make it my entire personality not to ask librarians where things are, so that scenario is unlikely. Normally though I just buy them, and if they don't exist, I just ... don't buy them.

After being on various social media platforms for most of a decade, I have #1 tattooed on my actual soul.
Without fail, every time I go to de-clutter the living room I come across drawings that the 7yo has made that are just ... well, you'll see what I mean.
My 9yo just came in and tattled on my 7yo because 7yo was calling *herself* stupid. I told the 7yo it's not nice to call people stupid and made her apologize to herself, which she did with lots of dramatic effect. By the end of it we were all laughing and I think the 7yo learned her lesson.
