I wrote a hat pattern that I use for teaching. Will figure out how to share, if you'd like. A simple hat is a great project to take with you anywhere. Once you know how to do it, you can make one in a few hours, without a pattern.
also, a tip from someone who owned a yarn store and has taught knitting for 30+ years: don't start with a scarf. takes a long time, teaches very few skills. a large percentage of beginners don't finish and don't continue knitting. A simple hat gives you a solid set of basic skills and is quicker.
studies have shown knitting a most therapeutic crafts. something about using both hands, asynchronously. and having the needle points cross in your view rhythmically, iirc. I knit & crochet. not sure why some say its easier to pick one back up than the other. I don't have an issue with either.
