and the software really does take over. if you run homebrew more often than not things like “going to sleep when the lid is closed” don’t work because the game has to have code built-in to handle that. that is a job for the OS nowadays.
the nintendo DS occupies a very interesting niche in the smartness of Devices:tm: where it does have a built-in operating system but its only job is to set things up before the actual software you want to run fully takes over. in this it’s similar to a DOS machine or an aliexpress microcontroller
i never finished trauma center: under the knife for nintendo ds for two reasons: a) i was disappointed it turned out to be a fantasy battle game rather than a realistic surgery simulator b) the final boss was very very hard although i would say the fantasy battle aspects were SUPER fun
