Oh 100%. But SAO is just important in the modern sense because it was a hit web novel that then got adapted as an anime and a *lot* of isekai slop comes from adapted web novels. That’s the pipeline that made this A Thing
Val 🏳️⚧️ (@valondar.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not inherent, though, and some of what are considered older examples of isekai (like Aura Battler Dunbine) do use a portal.
Val 🏳️⚧️ (@valondar.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. The work that made Isekai popular was Sword Art Online, which depending how you define it is not an isekai, but is about being trapped in a MMORPG you already knew. A lot of the post-SAO wave of isekai titles involved thriving in a new world due to knowledge of game mechanics.

Season one of TNG has a lot of reinventing the wheel. Very few of the main cast have the exact same job as someone from the original show - McCoy's role is sort of split between Crusher and Troi, Spock's between Riker and Data (*and* Riker takes a bit of Kirk as the away team lead) and so on.
Val 🏳️⚧️ (@valondar.bsky.social)
One of them - Argyle got two appearances, and, according to Wil Wheaton, he lobbied to get more by trying to start a fan write in campaign. This backfired by annoying the products so appear again he did not. He was also introduced once as 'one of our chief enginers' and boy was that true.
