Did you listen to the KYE about his book? They do the lord’s work by diving into this stuff but I do wish there had been an additional debunking episode focusing on the intellectual lineage of right wingers believing this thing no liberal actually think

I watched A Sorority Mom's Guide to Rush (a new reality TV show) was so charmed and moved by it that I had to talk to the producer! It just so happened to be Vanity Fair's Rush Week www.vanityfair.com/style/story/...

this is *exactly* why the birthratecels are so obsessed with it—like most conservative shibboleths, there is absolutely no policy lever that exists other than authoritarianism, so you can just holler about it in newspaper columns and never expect anything real to change

What school closure discourse is a reminder of is that there are a lot of ppl in this country, cutting across the political spectrum, who reject the very concept of tradeoffs or that there could ever be a situation where all solutions have downsides & you just gotta pick the least bad one.

It was the wedding of one of my neighbors from my freshman year of college, so I was looking at all of these men, truly good men, who were once boys, and it made me so emotional

This was a fascinating read! I do really disagree with those readings of Weapons and Nosferatu—I loved them, partially because I saw them as thuddingly obvious commentaries on topics of Public Concern: Nosferatu is the battle between science and religion, Weapons is child abuse/public schooling

I love Nolan and I think that comparison helps me understand why I *hated* The Brutalist. Dialogue doesn’t have to be naturalistic to sound good, but it does have to convey something to make it worthwhile. I thought the Brutalist was a totally empty movie
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
The Brutalist was the most excruciating example of this I have experienced in years. Nearly four hours of wondering “Has Brady Corbet ever listened to someone speak before????”
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
Precisely! But moderate conservatives struggle to admit this because it means they should have been listening to the leftists they were dunking on and excluding from society from the 1960s to November 2024

I’m posting this while sitting in an Irish bar in Boston wearing a Yale Daily News hat, clearly I live in William F. Buckley’s America! Thanks, I hate it

Been thinking about this ever since Sam Tannenhaus said on KYE that he originally imagined his Buckley biography being a story of triumph. He sees Trump as invalidating the project, but I think the project was 100% successful, but the consequences were clearly incredibly shitty
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social)
People like Bill Maher saying this about the New Deal Order is how you know Bill Buckley actually won the culture war, even if everyone hates living in the reality he designed for us

Dad was an elder at an Orthodox Presbyterian Church (breakaway sect of the J. Gresham Machen breakaway PCA focused on premillennialism), which had like 35k members at the time of the murders. If just one of those members commits a pretty horrible crime with a religious focus, that's CRAZY
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
The Frontline doc talks to the dad of John Earnest, who murdered people at a synagogue after engaging with pro-mass shooter content a bunch online. The dad knows he was into patriarchal, antisemitic stuff—that was part of his religion—but "didn't think he was violent." What does that mean to us now?
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
Clearly it's partly because our American "normal" tolerates some pretty fucking bizarre and threatening behavior. But I am fascinated by the way compulsion and magical thinking are exacerbated by the forms of community that draw socially isolated teens into them
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social)
As a digital native millennial, I've always really struggled to totally understand how the internet takes an otherwise "normal" kid and turns them into a violent nihilist, but it really is something we have to get better at discussing because it is happening a BUNCH

It sounds naive, I'm sure, but looking back over the last 20-odd years of discussions about what is wrong with academia and how or how not to fix it, the idea that scholars produce knowledge (not just jobs, tech, or texts), and that that is an important social good, is largely and strikingly absent.
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent

Yeah, the challenge with it is that it treats certain movement symptoms but doesn’t reverse any neurodegeneration or brain network changes. So it can be great for certain people/specific points in disease progression but it’s not a magic bullet or cure
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, it’s gotten a LOT better even in the last 5-10 years or so. I have a movement disorder (not a candidate for DBS at this point) but this looks about like the tech I’ve seen at my neurologists office for the people that have gotten it

Yeah, but having a phone during a lockdown does nothing to prevent gun violence? It might make a parent feel slightly more stressed temporarily, but it doesn't change what actually happens during it
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
I get that, but as a former teacher, I do think there is something valuable about learning to get through that fear without your parents! That might not work for everyone, but I think it's worth remembering that it's possible
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
That makes sense, though my perspective as a former teacher is that the availability of cell phones in that situation has eliminated the presumption that your kid would be okay unless you were informed otherwise. I think we should try to get back to that place, though i know it's hard
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social)
truly wtf is wrong with parents who need to be in contact with their kids at all times??? don't you need a little break from time to time, to pretend to be the person you were before you brought new life into the world?
Erin Vanderhoof (@vanderhoofy.bsky.social) reply parent
have you seen the documentary about the stunt actor who suffered a spinal cord injury on set? The movie ironically really emphasizes exactly how great an environment it was for the kids and how that has lasted into adulthood
