im not contesting that the way we use the word is not literal, just that it wouldn't confuse anyone to see machine work on a "handmade" piece
this teacher for example likes to stress the difference between "handmade" and "homemade" as differences in (often machine based) technique
that's not my experience from buying or learning to make custom garments. both teachers and other sewists use the word "handmade" like this and there is no confusion. we use "hand sewing" or "hand finish" to refer to, well, hand sewing
no, i know. but a custom garment (which im assuming is the context) is still called "handmade" if u used a machine. in that context it doesn't literally mean that other clothes are not made by hand, rather that this one was made to order instead of being one of hundreds on the rack
