I'm quoted in this paper about the problems with #What3Words. arxiv.org/pdf/2308.160... W3W is a proprietary and for-profit system which shouldn't be used anywhere near government or emergency services. It is prone to catastrophic failure and their business model appears to be unsustainable.

There’s a lot of people saying ‘mission-driven government’, especially people in government, without there actually being a structure or operating model established for that. Nice that Nesta and other folks are suggesting models, but it feels like the time to implement one was 12 months ago.

Just a headsup for data/tech engineering + policy ppl that Reform's proposed mass deportations bill/policy is expected to include stuff on mandated data sharing so that govt can look for "people that might be illegal immigrants" in the proverbial big data haystack www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

The NHS, HM Revenue & Customs and the DVLA will be required to share data automatically so illegal immigrants can be tracked down and arrested. Every element of the plan is contentious and it is likely to encounter huge practical, political and legal obstacles. Farage appears to embrace the controversy.

Great day visiting West Oxfordshire District Council’s planning people. So much context picked up across the entire lifecycle of a piece of planning information. There is nothing quite like getting out of the building and observing your users.

A stone-built Victorian house serves as the Woodgreen Offices for West Oxfordshire District Council. The two-story building with distinctive gabled roofline sits behind a car park area surrounded by a low stone wall. A large green sign displays council information and contact details, with flagpoles flying the Ukrainian flag, Union Jack, and other flags. Mature trees frame the scene under a partly cloudy blue sky. A Dell laptop sits open on a wooden conference table displaying a GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping application. The screen shows a detailed digital map with color-coded property parcels in various shades including orange, yellow, green, and blue, with red boundary lines delineating different zones or properties. A sidebar panel on the left contains mapping tools and layer options. Interior view of an archive or records storage facility with exposed ceiling beams. Shelving units on rails line both sides of a central aisle marked with yellow safety lines on the floor. The shelves contain numerous document boxes, files, and archival materials. A person in a checkered shirt examines historical maps stored in a large flat filing drawer. The open drawer reveals aged survey maps or architectural plans with red boundary lines and technical drawings.

a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads:
