Yeah, that's one place where colonialism really DOES get sucked into the popular discourse about the arrival of anatomically modern humans in Europe, esp. white supremacists. The turnaround in the vision of Neanderthals once Pääbo published the "Eurasians have Neanderthal DNA" paper was *hilarious*.
Val Syverson 🕷️ (@vjpsyverson.bsky.social) reply parent
To expand on that thought, when I see someone say "humans reached Eurasia XXX years ago", I assume it's Homo sapiens, and H. sapiens in Eurasia 1.8 Mya would indeed be a surprise (from what I remember). On the other hand, H. erectus in Eurasia at 1.8 Mya is well within expected range.
Val Syverson 🕷️ (@vjpsyverson.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, for sure. When I say "there's lots of people talking about it", I'm speaking of a more or less totally academic discourse. The popular conversation is a whole other issue & I agree that it doesn't contain much about the colonization of Eurasia (though the Neanderthal discourse gets weird).
