So the way we naturally communicate ideas is by explaining it multiple times, in different words, from different angles, not by constructing and sharing one master definition.
I think about the @maklelan.bsky.social explanation all the time. Our brains don’t learn language by creating definitions for words, they create clusters of related words and ideas. Then we create definitions after the fact to help nudge people towards that, but that’s all a definition does.
One bit of advice I feel like I can offer anybody is don’t spend your time and energy arguing over definitions. If these terms help you understand your life that’s great. But if you try to explain something and instead end up arguing which words *should* explain something, you’ve hit a cul de sac.

And yeah, calling it an inconvenience for dads who hate their kids set me off.
And now I don’t talk about it much, because yeah, the right has made it into a talking point and it’s too exhausting to get into it while also trying to separate all that nonsense. But it did happen, and I’m still mad at the city and county.
Yeah, it sucked. It was probably the worst time I had as a parent and the time I was most freaking out about how I didn’t know how to be a good parent in that environment.
Meanwhile my wife and I are both self employed, so we’re trying (and failing) to keep our anxiety and panic from reaching the kid. We’re all cooped up in our 2 bedroom, one of us trying to work while the other tries to keep the kid from tearing the walls down out of pent up energy.
Even after the playgrounds and parks reopened, all the official guidance basically encouraged people to go to work and to spend money, but minimize the “fun” stuff - which happened to include all the things that are important for kids to do.
We don’t have a yard. No play dates. I remember taking my kid to a mostly quiet office park so he could ride his tricycle around the parking lot while I stressed about watching all the driveways for cars entering, and I was furious.
My kid wasn’t even in school yet, he was 2. Los Angeles closed playgrounds for 6 months, long after reopening bars and gyms. Beaches and trails were closed for 8 weeks.
I get that these conversations have been poisoned by antivaxxers and various right wing anti-lockdown weirdos. But acting like there’s something wrong with parents or kids who didn’t roll with the punches is not the move.

Totally. When I was younger I hadn’t been diagnosed and I was a little more worried about being seen as rude or annoying, so it took me too long to start telling bosses to stop telling me things until I had a notebook to write them down
