The Macintosh Double Plus was designed to be twice as good as its predecessor - it featured double the pixels, width, floppies, and a pair of 8Mhz 68010 CPUs. Its planned successor, the Double Plus Good with a pair of 16Mhz CPUs was thrown down the memory hole. Pridecauseful.

Good, you made a solid decision there. I'm just not sure about your desires so I was starting from the most minimalist. For bazzite/linux, my advice is to take a junker and see if it works for you before investing time and effort on a permabox. It may be what you want or a horrible choice.

Well, yes. That's kind of the point. You find out what doesn't work with one of those. Then you use the experience to define what you actually need. It's very effective, but cruel.
On the other hand if you want gaming, bazzite. Should make things pretty painless
Bazzite is a fedora based distro, that uses proton, for good gaming. bazzite.gg But I still say Chromebook is worth consideration, for a first laptop. It's cheapish, and you can figure out what he can't do with it and get something that actually works for you when you replace that.
How about a Chromebook? It's sort of easy and compatible with things, and not windows.
It's bad form to quote somebody quoting me, but I do think this captures (one of!) the key dynamics that you see in pre-modern societies, with another one being the use of wergild and blood-feuds between kinship groups to regulate violence. It's just MAD dynamics on an interpersonal level.
