I would build a personal roller rink with a giant disco ball, colored lights, neon squiggle carpet, and a DJ booth with (1) every song you could ever want to skate to and (2) a microphone to announce couples’ skate and the Hokey Pokey.

That good omen did not apply to my back, which hurts like hell after some admittedly unwise decisions yesterday. I still have lots of lifting and carrying to do, and yes I am taking it very personally (and slowly).

I slept through my alarm this morning when I desperately needed to be up on time. Now that I’m finally back in bed, my brain is like, “Nice try, bitch! If you fall asleep, you’ll just sleep through your alarm again. We’re gonna stay wide awake alllll night!”

* I love horror + film noir (thus my enduring love for THE SEVENTH VICTIM) and Kaufman’s INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS is such a gorgeous example of horror, sci-fi, and neo-noir working together * As long as movies exist, I hope a new BODY SNATCHERS version keeps coming out for each generation

You think explaining lesbians to kids is awkward? I was at Domino's and my 5-yo asked what a sticker that said “avoid the noid” meant and I was like “uh, it's um the anthropomorphism of waiting for a pizza more than 30 minutes or uhhh it's not fresh or something um” and quickly changed the subject.

Art is about making connections and expanding the world; gen AI is about severing connections and shrinking the world. Creative inspiration is one of the very best things about being human and I’ll never understand trying to automate it into oblivion. (5/5)
Jessica Scott (@wewhowalkhere.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m just thinking about how uncomfortable and thrilling and terrifying and freeing it is to sit with a blank page or canvas and do your best to put something meaningful on it, and how you abdicate your humanity when you decide you’d rather push a button than work through those feelings. (4/5)
Jessica Scott (@wewhowalkhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course, you can’t make connections that are both unexpected and meaningful when you’re mindlessly copying and pasting other people’s work. Gen AI is theft, period. We’ve all seen amusing non sequiturs in AI slop before, but it’s empty pantomime from the uncanny valley, not art. (3/5)
Jessica Scott (@wewhowalkhere.bsky.social) reply parent
My most interesting ideas usually come when my mind is relaxed and free to make unexpected, meaningful connections. But these tech ninnies either never experience that or they can’t handle waiting for that spark. So they try to force it, which gives them predictably terrible results. (2/5)
Jessica Scott (@wewhowalkhere.bsky.social)
Not that I’m the spokesperson for The Arts™️ or anything, but I keep coming back to how anti-human it is to be anti-art-slash-pro-gen-AI. Inspiration is one thing you absolutely cannot automate. You can work on it, but in my experience you ultimately just have to let it happen. (1/5)
