I am calling you from here in the heart of GenX to say that I have watched probably a hundred hours of movies targeted at youts and they were unquestionably capable of being that hackneyed, half-assed, and flat without even word processors.

Maybe this guy is always a bad communicator and this is part of that. But absent indications in the post that he’s always sucked, there’s a possibility that this lousy behavior is rooted in shame. Yeah, he should do better with his spouse. But body shame is harder for some than others.
No, and you’ll not ever find me defending bad male behavior and my natural inclination to give the benefit of the doubt has been well and truly beaten to death this last decade or two. But the one place I can still muster some sympathy is on medical stuff, particularly the “gross” things.
I’m uncomfortable with calling anyone’s enjoyment of art - particularly reading, given its decline - -wrong- but I absolutely concur with the idea that people should expand their horizons. Whether that’s expansion from child lit or any particular genre.

It’s been over twenty years since the first time I handed my ID to someone at a bar entrance and they swiped the stripe on my then-Florida license to validate it. They might not have been data mining then but you can be absolutely sure they do now.
I’m behind you all the way on this issue but (a) is largely inaccurate. They absolutely do “get” to scan and store because our protections against getting tossed into massive databases to be analyzed and marketed to are total shit. And scan&store has been steadily on the rise for decades now.

I took armed security guard training in VA about 20y ago (don’t ask) and that was about what we got - 3h classroom, a few hours of range time. Of course we also got, repeatedly, you are not law enforcement, don’t interject yourself into shit, you have an obligation to back down. Woo progress.

I’ll defy old dude tradition and say I don’t think it’s a matter of better or worse. But for folks raised on the latter the former seems boring and slow.
In older cop shows you’d join the cops on the journey. They’d leave the station, get in a car, exposition would happen along the way. In newer shows *dum-DUHM* you’re at the new location. Less exposition more reveal though conflict.
I rarely bother trying to show my under-13 kids older movies because even aside from story and effects they’re just not held by it because of the way everything changed over time in story PACING. The most dramatic example is from Hawaii 5-0 to Law&Order.

Which in addition to being mean won’t even work! The folks with mental challenges aren’t going to disappear and there will always be some of them drawn to the seat of government. I wish the fact that they come here from everywhere else was enough to motivate the senators who use DC as a plaything.
But that question is about what’s good for them, not about satisfying other people’s desire to have other human facing challenges hidden away from view. Even a lazy and unexamined “just go back to involuntary committal” would be less evil than sweeping folks up like they’re vermin.
There’s a serious conversation to be had about how we deal with mental illness in our country and if this is the right way; Pete Earley’s book CRAZY dives deep into how we got here via well-meaning challenges to institutionalization. I think “should we let people live rough” is a fair question.
Even that aside, wouldn’t there be any contracts sort of issue here? Surely there’s some basis to contest someone revoking something you were promised and spent a decade or two working towards.
