I would agree the Ag Census is flawed but so is the general census. It is nearly impossible to gather all the information at a national level. We try to gather data on our county where I know the farmers and it is still very challenging.
-Lifestyle ag (mostly equine) don't typically report on the NASS because they don't know it exists. Our Conservation District promotes the Ag Census but it doesn't reach everyone -NASS gathers more information than just the 5 yr census. Specific surveys include organic acres & specialty crops
Couple of thoughts - -The ag census serves different purposes in WA. Eastern WA is production ag but Western WA is heavily urbanized. Lifestyle ag captures the parcels not yet converted to dense housing. -Ag/non-ag employment is tracked at state level which is more accurate than a 5 yr snapshot

As a farmer the subtext to this thread is "I'm above farming because it's too hard and icky" yet people expect to each, have cheap food and full shelves. That work needs to be done by someone. Right now the majority of every American meal passes through migrant hands in exploitive ways.
This thread disturbs me. So much privilege and urban snobbery. Everyone eschews the heat, discomfort and physical demands of farming and growing food, yet seems okay with migrants doing it. Migrants do farm work because the have no other choice.
Yep. Farming isn't for everyone but most who leave the farm behind often had some toxic family stuff that was the issue not really the farm
