Yet another capitulation to Reform, when all the evidence shows that following the far right agenda is a disaster for centrist parties. Politics 101, which Starmer has once again entirely failed to grasp.

The Last Viking: Mads Mikkelsen plays a man with a bad haircut who thinks he’s John Lennon and who’s the only person who knows where his ex-con brother’s loot is hidden. Tonally wild, violent and funny. Fans of Anders Thomas Jensen and Mads prior collabs will love.

Below the Clouds: Gianfranco Rosi’s impressionistic documentary weaving stories of Naples into a tapestry of vapor, grain, tunnels and ruins. The emergency line for the fire brigade is like listening in on a city’s subconscious. I’m not so Much the “real Naples” as a dream of a possible one.

The idea of having gratitude to a country is only ever imposed on people of color. White people have “legitimate concerns”. Ingratitude is the new uppity.

The unraveling of the American state is fascinating to see happen. It’s like the conspiracy theorists have become what they always projected: an enemy from within wielding military and media power against their own citizenry. Without a radical & unlikely awakening, …

Sorrentino’s LA GRAZIA is his best since Il Divo, which in some ways it’s a thematic sequel to. But a much less cynical, much more hopeful version. A fantasy of a country’s president who isn’t a raving arsehole. Sorrentino reigns in his lewd excesses and makes a good film.

One of the things I love is when someone takes a novel to script and turns it into a sequel for a totally unrelated franchise. Like the novel that Die Hard 2 is based on. Or the fact Saw 2 was a completely unrelated horror script and the producers just said we need another Saw. This’ll do.

This means that the majority of the culture we absorb comes from a class whose interests we not only don’t share but also might go against our own interests. The middle class make films about the working class and the rich make films about everyone. Discuss.

One thing I don’t think we talk about enough is how much the arts are dominated by very wealthy people. I don’t mean studio owners. I mean directors, writers and actors who either come from privilege or are soon awarded with enough to move them into wealth (if they’re successful). (1/2)
