Yes, that’s what I do: get the kiddo to choose a backing fabric and pull a couple of colours from it, then I supplement that with fq’s or scraps based on the scrappiness level of the pattern I’m making. Having the backing first makes the rest cohesive even if they’re not my preferred colours.
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m so glad it found you. That’s what I hope for all the quilts I make: that they find the right person, even if it’s not the first person who receives it.

Almost any vintage machine will be ok for a starter — look for straight stitch, reverse, and zigzag. You won’t need hundreds of stitches, but speed control is helpful. Avoid Singers made in the past 50 years. If you want new, Janome entry level are pretty good (the one with cats on it is even cute!)

So anyway, the two types of villains in Discworld novels are: a) chaotic megalomaniacs who do evil haphazardly and can be thwarted by exploiting their own flaws; and b) soulless bureaucrats who do evil extremely efficiently and sleep soundly in their beds. I know which one is the lesser evil.

Happy Labour Day! This is the day when we honour and celebrate the history of the Canadian Labour Movement. Did you know Americans took the idea for Labor Day from Canada? Or that the holiday dates back 130+ years? This is the story! 🧵 1/9

It looks amazing already! Rule of thumb is that thinner thread emphasizes texture (because the stitches are less visible), whereas thicker thread emphasizes line. So if you want the thread to be a feature, go for perle cotton in 8-weight or 12-wt; for the thread to blend, go 40 or 50-wt cotton.

Yes absolutely there are small tents (1-2 person: they are rectangular not square). Depending on how heavy the blanket is, any dome tent should work.

My first quilt, circa 2006: a log cabin in blues and greens with brown centres. I pieced it in a quilting class in small town Saskatchewan, quilted it very sparsely in the ditch with a walking foot, hand-quilted a cable border, made it into a quillow, and gave it to my dad. #SewAndTell #QuiltSky

Two more recommendations: 1) with 2nd-hand fabric, wash it hot & dry it hot too. If it’s going to shrink or bleed, better before you cut into it. 2) don’t save money with bad or old thread: it’ll be frustrating & not last as long. Aurifil 50wt or other good thread for piecing is worth the extra.
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
4/ Or, to have it visible only as a pillow, “Chev” goes on the quillow top, and “rolet” on the quilt back (under the quillow when the quilt is open). As you said, best to appliqué the second part. I figure my quillow block size by dividing the quilt into 4 rows by 3 columns. DM me if it’s confusing
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
3/ once under where the quillow top is attached (so it’s visible when everything is folded up), and once aligned with the quillow back to be legible with the quilt open. You could piece both “Chev”, but I recommend appliqué for “rolet” *after* the quilt is finished, bound, & sewn to quillow top.
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
2/ So if you want to split “Chevrolet” into “Chev” on the quillow front and “rolet” on the quilt back, and have both parts of the word visible at all times, you’ll need 2 sets: “Chev” on *quillow* front & back, and “rolet” on *quilt* back twice:
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
1/ So a quillow is a mini quilt with its own front & back, attached to the backing of the quilt (I add gussets for ease). When the quilt is open, the quillow back shows; but when the quilt is folded in, the quillow front and _quilt_ back show like a regular pillow. (You probably already knew that.)

If you want to go traditional patchwork, there are lots of great patterns that only use squares and rectangles: the classics are 9-patch and Irish Chain, but there are sooo many. If you want a more modern vibe, a designer I recommend is The Blanket Statement. Good luck, and keep #QuiltSky posted!
Zandra (@zandra-wpg.bsky.social) reply parent
You’re welcome! For your first quilt, I would recommend only woven cotton or poly/cotton or cotton/rayon/viscose blends of all about the same light-medium weight: heavy weights and slippery or stretchy fabrics will dial up the difficulty level.
