Dylan, do Aussie lighting laws refer to energy consumption rather than light output? Our USA neighborhood claimed dark sky friendly because the LED lighting used a fraction of the wattage of the decade old guidance based on incandescent wattage. Maddening.

He hit a ridge while at an altitude lower than allowed on that approach. Viz was less than 1/2 mile, the ridge was farther than that away from runway. If you can’t swim and drown halfway across a pool, does it matter if there wasn’t a ladder at the other end? Wrong weather for that approach.
1/2 The tower was closed. He was obligated to use the best available weather source. That source was below minimum weather requirements for the no precision approach. (Sources have also shown he was also shooting an approach not suitable for his aircraft)
A better question is why couldn’t he tell the boss in the back that unfortunately we’ll need to land in Palm Springs and drive the rest of the way home?
“Seems.” But with the weather significantly below mins he would have never seen them if he safely flew the approach. Ive flown precision approaches to Miramar three miles north down to 200’ and seen only a faint glow over the high intensity lights. NFW he could have safely landed in those conditions
It’s completely irrelevant, yet a fact. The pilot crashed well short of were he would have seen the lights were they working. He had the weather from a station with professional observers that was less than three miles away. He sit an approach with all the information needed to know it wouldn’t work

The real issue here, IMHO, is a president willing to walk back his earlier support for a national security issue in return for personal and political gain.
If the US government manipulated the algorithm against the US people the way China is accused, the USG would be violating the first amendment.
It’s not about spying. It’s about hostile foreign government using control of public comments to influence and control US public opinion. It was covert until last night when it became very overt. A government isn’t spying when you launch your text into the internet.

It’s bad, and imho it’s bad policy to have these centers so densely concentrated. Local grid failures will have far reaching impacts.
I live in Loudoun County. We have a higher than normal failure rate in our appliances and our air conditioners and heat pumps. You can literally hear the harmonic distortion in the breaker panel. There are shells of data centers in the area waiting on sufficient electrical supply from the utilities.
