4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
5/ Facts still matter, regardless of politics. Don't alienate others on your side because you are not 100% in agreement 100% of the time. This is why we progressives are falling behind - many want perfection in the group and I'm sorry, we have to agree to disagree at times to be able to win battles.

4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
2/ The meme was about underage marriages, and posted in the comments by another person. Clearly anti-GOP. BUT the statistics were misleading and for some reason, rubbed me the wrong way. I pointed that out as best as I could with the text limits. I was told to "fact check" myself.
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social)
1/ welp, as a very left of centre gal for life, super empath, socialist type, I just got blocked by someone whose posts/thoughts I really loved. I also love data and I hate memes that simplify laws and data, especially in the current days that we are in where polarization gets us no where.
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
I am correct in stating that California has no minimum age requirement for marriage. Details matter, regardless of politics. Eg: Idaho: Age of consent is 18. A 16-year-old may marry with parental consent, but no more than a 3 year age gap between the two parties. www.findlaw.com/family/marri...
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
which are similar requirements for many Republican states too. That's my point. It isn't 100% black and white, regardless of politics.
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
Found the report! This is what my data and methodology mind wants, not the meme. Laws have changed since 2000 (age and restriction improvements) and underage marriages have dropped significantly. Not zero, though. Not yet. www.unchainedatlast.org/united-state...
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
the biggest problem I see in this meme is that "adult men" is not defined. A 19 year old? A 30 year old? A 56 year old? Data matters to me and I'm trying to find it to understand the scope of the problem. π€·π»ββοΈ
4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
I checked the details after reading the meme. I'm not condoning child marriage. I am pointing out that nuance and details matter. Every state has its own rules. E.g. Texas is Republican and has a lower limit of 18, unless an emancipated minor. Many states have increased restrictions over time.

4streegrrl π¨π¦ (@4streegrrl.bsky.social) reply parent
I'll note that it is also a Democrat issue too: California and New Mexico have no minimum age for marriage. And prior to 2000, underage marriage was legal in ALL 50 states. Some states that have been both Dem and Rep have and still have under-18 marriage in that time frame. Both sides are to blame.
