#Monarch update! While one caterpillar continues napping, another is going to go missing in the next day or two to start pupating itself. A third caterpillar appears to be a step or two behind its siblings and is shedding its skin now to enter either the 4th or 5th instar.
No wonder she gave up on the cult word of the day!

The caterpillars are small this year. Even the pupa seems small. Maybe it's the weather? It's making it hard to estimate their developmental stage!
I hadn't seen the 5th instar caterpillar in a few days. We've had storms here so I was a bit concerned. Tonight I found this pretty new looking cocoon a few feet away from the milkweed! I also found that one of the little guys has reached stage 3 or maybe 4. #monarch #butterfly

We had storms move through overnight. I haven't found the smaller caterpillars today, but it looks like the biggest one moved into the 5th instar, I think... This isn't the biggest caterpillar I've had out in the nursery, but it does have the white spots on its legs that they get at the 5th instar.
Of course I planted this coneflower yesterday and we got a decent storm last night. It seems to have fared ok.
