Because rural red counties are “failed states” with no tax base. Without federal and state funding they’d have no infrastructure at all. We’ve got rural counties that have a dozen sheriff cars (through state and federal grants) but can only afford to hire two or three deputies.

Yes! I agree, rifles and long arms are scary, as they are used in mass shootings at (suburban, white) school, churches, etc But iiuc handguns are a much larger, although less sensational, crime/violence issue. Urban kids have to deal with the threat of handguns everywhere.

I'm skeptical in depth technical knowledge is required. People perhaps correctly lawyer that "assault" is a vague non-technical description. But deaths went down when the assault ban was in place. Go argue in court about textbook definitions while lives are being saved.
