The World's Columbian Exposition that was hosted in Chicago in 1893 had an entire city of similarly spectacular, massive-scale buildings in this manner, right in the middle of Chicago. Due to the temporary nature of the event though, many were made of plaster, but were still entirely functional

alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Yess, that’s the Santa Monica pier I think! It also the area that’s always catching on fire every summer 😭
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
apart. It can feel kind of bleak. The entire Cali coast is beautiful though.
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Noo, that’s fine! Was it the Santa Monica pier? That area is actually really nice. It’s where i was when i went to the Getty villa! Generally though, lots of LA, at least imo, is kind of run down. There’s lots of poverty both in the people, and businesses, and then everything is concrete and spread
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
truee, truee. how did you like the cities in Cali when you visited? I don’t hate the place, but everything is soo far spread out
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
and then also just lots of cool stuff, cafes, etc! pretty good public transport as well, which is like completely new to me coming from Cali
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, at least compared to LA, it’s actually walkable and feels enjoyable to be in. Architecture is really pretty, and there’s lots of parks and nature right in the middle of the city. Lotssss of young people as well- colleges and unis like every turn! Also very safe for a major city!
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s the only major city I’ve ever been to outside of California (excluding NYC which I visited briefly when I was much younger), but I love it so much
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
LA is comparatively evil and needs to be wiped off of the map
alp (@alp1.bsky.social)
I love Boston so much. Every hour I spend here heals me for like three days going forward

Photograph of the William I. Koch Gallery within Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Of particular note are the Velázquez portraits of King Philip IV of Spain and the young Maria Theresa, who would become queen of France. Also present are paintings by Van Dyck, Titian, and Peter Paul Rubens. #photography
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup, they’re just stories so it’s up to artist interpretation
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
But in the ones I posted I think it’s more so thought to be metaphorical as I can’t find any confirmations, at least for the first two. I initially said it because it was a remark in the lecture I watched about the dyck painting
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
True! I actually only saw the first one yesterday while looking into the Van Dyck painting I posted and I lol’d because the Icarus is literally just the two tiny legs in the water in the bottom right, barely visible. As far as the inserts, lots of faces in paintings are based on models / real ppl
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not too sure but my guess would be that the act of Icarus falling after flying too close to the sun is the more iconic association, and then a landscape is the easiest way to capture everything
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Certainly not with that attitude
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
yess. it wasn't uncommon for artists to depict themselves as characters within greek myths, but with the story of icarus in particular it was nearly always as a landscape, often with the two characters flying in the sky, or icarus falling. the portrait here is unique, and afaik one of the first

Closeup of Anthony Van Dyck's 'Self-Portrait as Icarus with Daedalus', one of my favorite paintings within the MFA. Van Dyck painted this at just 19, but the foreshortening (though imperfect), delicate curls, and fingers clasped gently around Daedalus' head already show immense ability.
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh my
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
yeah, I don't believe there was much of an existing mechanical method for copying oil paint from a template; it was largely something that had to be done by hand. Also, the attendant did point out some of the cracks in the paint, of which there were many, to indicate the aging.
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
The museum website says: "To create these panels, silver leaf was glued to leather hide and then coated with layers of yellow-tinted varnish to give the hangings their rich, golden color." I asked the attendee in person how they maintained them, and he said he didn't know lol
alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
The room is titled after the large painting which adorns its ceiling, 'The Coronation of Hebe', by the workshop of Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese. Gardner acquired it while the museum palace was already midway through it's construction.
alp (@alp1.bsky.social)
Photograph I took of the Veronese Room within the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The decorated paneling on the wall is painted leather, an expensive furnishing popular in palaces and, occasionally, locations of worship from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Also, funnily enough, West was largely self-taught, both in the arts, and in terms of his general education. While head of the Royal Academy, he could barely spell (😭). He's also the first American-born painter to receive international recognition for his work.

Photograph I took of the Ruth and Carl Shapiro Gallery in Boston's MFA. The large painting in the center is 'Devout Men Taking the Body of St. Stephen' by Benjamin West.

alp (@alp1.bsky.social) reply parent
No, I also don't drink fridge-cooled water. When I visited my parents they had a water filter in a fridge and I would pour a glass and then microwave it for ~15 seconds to bring it to just a chilled temperature 😭

Ur literally right though. Or maybe cold / slightly below room temperature, but definitely not iced.
