If nothing else, Trump will be our last boomer president and for that, we can all be grateful.

This is what patriotism and true egoless leadership looks like. Thanks for your service, Rep. Nadler. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/01/n...

In a recent interview in his downtown Manhattan office, Mr. Nadler, 78, said he hesitated to step aside when he believes that President Trump is threatening the foundations of democracy. But he said he had been persuaded it was time for a changing of the guard.

Co-endorsing @amandalitman.bsky.social endorsement of @espiers.bsky.social blog post today www.elizabethspiers.com/why-dems-kee... The passage I'll flag is on risk tolerance. Own your little failures as learning process. That honesty resonates authenticity with people! Move fast and build things!

6) We need to try things knowing that most of them will fail, and be much more risk tolerant with content. This is how we innovate. I think right and left media are heavily asymmetrical so I try resist direct comparisons (e.g, one side is willing to weaponize conspiracy theories, the other is not.) But one thing that the right does that the left does not is spread a lot of money around, try everything, and not flagellate themselves endlessly when something fails. Every time I talk to people about funding liberal media projects, they bring up Air America. Air America!! Air America had a six year run, and it died FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. It has zero relevancy to our media environment here in the year of our lord twenty twenty five.

Super super smart (per usual) by @espiers.bsky.social, per usual on the problem with Democratic media efforts. www.elizabethspiers.com/why-dems-kee...

So what are the solutions? Well, reverse engineer everything above. Find people who know how to build organic audiences--lots of people, not just one or two. Fund them, and fund them well. Don't make them jump through 50 hoops over the course of 12 months to get a $50,000 check. That is useless, it wastes their time, and they can't do anything useful with it. Drive the car like you stole it. Be aggressive, fast, generous and ratchet up your fault tolerance. Understand that in order to be effective you are going to have to build a media ecosystem that holds contradictions and is representative of the Democratic populace, not some imaginary median voter who everyone assumes is a platonic centrist (despite evidence to the contrary, which is another post.) There are lots of different kinds of Democrats. There should not be a monolithic template for talking to them and if Dems try to force all of these efforts into one, they will end up talking to no one. Learn the difference between bad and good content, and not by message testing or doing paid spend it but by putting it in front of audiences and seeing what works organically. (People also use really shitty metrics to decide whether something is having political impact, but that's a whole other post too. I could write a treatise on why ad performance on meta as a metric is stupid but this is already running long.)

In an interview earlier this month, I talked a bit about online fundraising in the Democratic Party, my own personal culpability here as an email fundraiser from 2012-2016, and how @runforsomething.net thinks about it. eressler.substack.com/p/amanda-lit...

How are you thinking about fundraising in your world and, more broadly, how can we bring people together for these movements in a way that's constructive — not extractive or transactional? Amanda Litman: I've been thinking a lot about this because my original career entry point was in digital fundraising. My first job was doing online fundraising for Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2012. I did the same thing in 2014. Then I ran Hillary Clinton's email program, which was asking people for money and to volunteer and engage in other ways — primarily grassroots support. I remember in 2012 running an experiment on our email list testing, was there such a thing as too much email? One of my jobs for two months was that every day I was responsible for picking the two or three emails we were going to send that day and sending it to an additional test group and a control group to determine: was there a limit to how many times we could ask people to give? What we found in that experiment — this was 2012, over a decade ago — more email meant more money even when you factored in unsubscribes. And if our job on the campaign was to raise the money to help win, that was worth it, even if people complained. We were thoughtful and careful about the tactics we used as part of those emails. We were intentional about making emails sound like the voice they were coming from. We thought about treating supporters with respect. Our guiding ethos was to never treat the list like an ATM. Over the decades since then, people and programs have internalized So we're at a standstill. I still don't think that's an excuse to treat supporters like crap, but I understand the motivation for these organizations to do so. It's a big conversation among the Democratic left and the broader nonprofit sector: how do you do this in a way that sustains the work and the relationship?

If I could gift parents/mothers in my life something it'd be no weird feelings about using daycare. I know for a fact it was good for me as a kid + good for my parents (we all had great memories of that time). PS: I was also a formula baby. I now have 3 degrees + a good life. It's going to be okay.

This is silly and once again runs into the core tension that anyone dictating message (from any ideology!) runs into: Telling candidates what to say by definition compromises their authenticity.

I thought scolding people about what language they use was part of the problem?

Conservatives have spent decades pushing the false message that daycare is dangerous. They created a whole satanic panic! And their goal was to guilt moms into staying home full time or diverting energy they could devote to being a boss at work to being a boss of a nanny at home.

My kid is 11(!) now but I feel this in my BONES. Still pals with some daycare buds. I remember my kid twisting out of my arms at ~5mos to try and get to his provider. Also did a happy dance when he went to public pre-k at 4.

I tell people all the time - daycare has been the best thing to happen to our lives as parents, in large part because of the community we've found and the strength and support of that community. Agree w/ everything Amanda says here

So we've found our parent community, and our kids have their friend community, and also our kids have the daycare parents community as bonus adults who love them and help them thrive (and sometimes even offer to help or mentor them in areas we cannot). It's the best.

When the GOP (illegally) redraws these maps, they're going to dilute Trump+10 districts into Trump+7 or Trump+5 districts - with the right candidate in a wave election, we might be able to make those competitive. This is why I'm glad/proud @runforsomething.net built a great bench everywhere.

A $2500 bribe to proactively keep streets dangerous is such small potatoes for big consequences.

Some @runforsomething.net news: Starting with 2026 candidates, we’ll consider values-aligned leaders running as independents.

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK - Expanding the zone: Run for Something, the progressive group that recruits and backs young candidates for state and local office, is expanding for the first time to start endorsing independents in addition to Democrats. It's an indication that emerging political energy on the left may not always wear the Democratic label; Run for Something says it sees an

The “establishment” has basically no juice anymore - I don’t think any primary will take it to this level of ridiculousness (NYC is one of one!) but I suspect we will see more of the old guard melting down in some way over the next year.
