I am 65, and a criminologist. Crime has plummeted since 1980. What remains is a function of poverty and wealth inequality, which the US is unmotivated to abolish. Abolish poverty and you'll have very little violent/property crime. Abolish wealthy white men and you'll have less white collar crime.

My informed theory is COVID. He's elderly and high risk. He's no doubt had several infections by now. If he hasn't had a vaccine since last fall he had little protection by now, and we're in a COVID wave. He must not be too sick though, since he's not hospitalized. Probably on Paxlovid and others.

That new cases number is too low. Wherever you're pulling that from is not a reliable source. You'd expect way more cases to have that level of hospitalizations/ICU/deaths.

I agree. He's 79, has had god knows how many infections, has multiple high risk factors, and probably hasn't had a vaccination in nearly a year. He's getting all the good drugs, though, while those of us who've had long COVID for half a decade are told we can't even try anything experimentally.
