Aug. Gas Emissions Update- After purchasing a 3-season HVAC Heat Pump & Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) we've had 5 months with <=0.1 MCF/month gas use. In fact, we shut off our gas seasonally 4 months ago so gas use dropped to 0.0 MCF/mo. That's cut our annual gas spending by $200 so far. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🌊🔋

Comparison of historic gas use per day (blue circles) which reached a maximum of ~0.7 MCF/day vs. gas use with a 3-season HVAC heat pump with gas backup (green circles), and gas use with the 3-season HVAC heat pump with gas backup and a HPWP (yellow circles), which reached a maximum of <0.3 MCF/day. The HPWH was installed in Jan. Since then gas use has been confined to times with temperatures <45°F. Gas backup kicks in at temps <20 degrees, except when cold fronts drop temperatures faster the 2°/hr. The switch to a heat pump water heater cuts gas us during temps >55°F from ~0.1 MCF/day to 0.0 MCF/day.

A one-time $3.3B would electrify 75% of Metrolink at Caltrain costs. SCORE and LinkUS have big funding gaps. But the LA delegation's proposed capital $ would mostly go to local improvements that are vaguely defined or don’t improve service - like ZE buses and grade separations.

In light of previous investments in the Bay Area and the Central Valley transportation, and the current proposal to appropriate $1 billion annually for high-speed rail, fairness and climate science require that $3.3 billion annually be invested in Los Angeles County regional transit. This funding should 1. Support operations to increase bus and rail service frequency, improve reliability, and restore transit as a competitive option for daily commuters. 2. Fund capital improvements, including regional connectors to high speed rail, bus rapid transit corridors, electrification of bus and rail fleets, first/last-mile safety and grade separations that reduce delays. 3. Advance equity mandates, by prioritizing projects with high road labor standards and community benefits that serve disadvantaged communities.

New study confirms dramatic drop in air pollution in Paris between 2012 and 2022: • 40% drop in NO2 (smog) • 28% drop in PM2.5 (particulates) Modernization of the car fleet played the biggest role in decline—but the city's 34% drop in car traffic was instrumental. www.airparif.fr/actualite/20...

Determinants of the change in PM2.5 (particulate pollution) from road transport between 2012 and 2022. Overall, pollution declined from road sources declined by 63%. Of this, about 2/3 was due to the modernization of the vehicle fleet to make it less polluting. 1/3 was due to the city's dramatic decline in car traffic. Our comment on the DOE CWG report is done. It tips the scales at 439 pages, approx. 3x longer than the DOE report. This is related to Brandolini's law: The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it. Example: refuting one sentence.

DOE CWG STATEMENT (second paragraph of section 2.1.1, page 3): “Piao et al. (2020) noted that greening was even observable in the Arctic.” COMMENT: This statement implies that the Arctic greening signal was caused by elevated CO2 , however that is not the scientific consensus. Piao et al. (2020) attribute the greening trend in the Arctic predominantly to growing season length driven by warmer temperatures (see also Y. Zhang et al., 2022). Piao et al. (2020) also note that this positive impact of increasing temperatures appears to have weakened over the past four decades, “suggesting a possible saturation of future greening in response to warmer temperature” (see also comment on greenness trends related to Section 2.1.1, first sentence of Page 4). It is also important to put Arctic greening more broadly into the context of the carbon cycle and other impacts. While above-ground plants may have displayed more leaf area over the past decades, rising temperatures also thaw permafrost and drive accelerated decomposition in highly carbon rich soils (Turetsky et al., 2020), a process which is expected to accelerate as climate continues to warm (Miner et al., 2022). Thus even with Arctic greening, high latitude terrestrial systems may become net carbon sources to the atmosphere, causing an amplifying feedback (Braghiere et al., 2023). Other risks to the Arctic linked to higher CO2 levels and rising temperatures are not mentioned in this report (Virkkala et al., 2025). The Arctic is warming at a rate of 2 to 3 times the global average, leading to thawing of permanently frozen soils (permafrost), with downstream impacts including loss of structural support for buildings and subsidence, threatening communities, roads, runways, and other assets across Alaska (Manos et al., 2025; University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering US Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District & Laboratory, 2019).

Having participated in this effort (some editing, leading the review of DOE CWG citations), I can confidently say that @andrewdessler.com is a helluva leader. Many of us contributed, and Andy's oversight, organizational work, and vision are ensuring those contributions will matter.

Yep. I'm holding out hope though that U.S. gets some good EU things out of it but a) current climate means bad U.S. ideas to be "accepted" b) hurts Canada's chance to align with EU standards and leave US alignment behind.
