Depending on the course and whether knowledge/mastery of content is essential, you could also assess participation & products of in-class exercises. Less testy, more process oriented. I’m big on reflections too, but I hear these are being run through LLMs too—tho possibly more easy to detect.

ā€œGiven the ongoing genocide in Gaza…we call on Sport Canada and Tennis Canada to forbid Canadian athletes to compete against Israeli athletes at the Davis Cup and all other international events.ā€ - 413 šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ academics, athletes + sports journalists, inc 3 former UN special rapporteurs + an Olympic 🄈ist

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (FREDERICTON, August 18th, 2025) A group of 413 Canadian and Canadian-based scholars, athletes, sports journalists, and sports officials have signed a public letter calling on Tennis Canada to cancel the Davis Cup tournament with Israel this September in Halifax. Signatories include three United Nations Special Rapporteurs, four-time Olympian distance runner Mohammed Ahmed, two members of the Palestinian women’s soccer team who compete for York University, a former Canadian Olympic beach volleyball coach, sports journalists Shireen Ahmed and Ian Kennedy, public intellectuals and activists Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis and some of Canada’s most distinguished and internationally-recognized scholars. The letter is signed by prominent individuals from 46 different academic institutions in Canada, as well as by Canadians at prominent global institutions. One hundred and six of the signatories are based in Atlantic Canada, where the event is slated to occur. The call to cancel the Davis Cup event comes amidst rising condemnation of Israeli conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, which leading legal scholars, activists and human rights groups have described as a genocide. Given the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the letter says that allowing the competition to go ahead is ā€œunconscionableā€ and calls on the Canadian government to prevent Canadian athletes from competing against Israeli athletes in all international sporting competitions. Despite Tennis Canada’s claims that the event isn’t political and is just about playing tennis, the letter states in part that Canada should follow the lead of other nations who ā€œrefuse to legitimize Israel’s crimesā€ by withdrawing from international sporting competition. ā€œThis includes Jordanian tennis player Abdellah Shelbayh, who recently withdrew from a tennis competition in Greece after being slated to play an Israeli athlete,ā€ the letter says. The letter points to the use of sporting sanctions in South Africa as a meaningful …

Another installment inšŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ā€™s fascination with collapsed post-mining towns—in this case layered onto the particularly weird form of adventurism that passes for ā€œexplorationā€ these days. Like, I’ve been to UC too and there is a schedule flight, dude, you don’t need to ski. youtube.com/watch?v=xr_-...

My piece echos Lynn Jacobs', but focuses on how even the best version of the Treaty includes Indigenous knowledge, but not Indigenous Peoples. Meaning, it's not a rights-based model like the one outlined by the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Canvas just became one of the most powerful surveillance, IP theft, & data monetization tools in the world. OpenAI bought a user-base locked in to long-term contracts. But they can’t make us use their trashware. Boycott. Luddify. Open source. Don’t let them have your work or your students.

In some ways, we might ask: what labour is made invisible by invoking the primacy of the PI/author? How might LLMs threaten (human) academic labour of all kinds, while remaining problematically invisibilized? We def need good politics/ethics around this.

Mostly agree... but of course in many fields, research is a distributed & collaborative activity, of which PIs are "managers" of a sort: RAs doing lit searches, lab techs doing experiments, colleagues & collabs shaping conclusions. LLMs are different than that, and problematic. But it's not B + W.
