Many things like this are actions, and the moment you declare that action to be your identity (or part of), it kind of cancels out. Self-awareness is fine too, to know you're empathetic, but it's in the declaration to others where the difference is made.
I'm not sure how I feel about "empath" as a self-given label. I feel a lot of compassion in my heart, and do my best to express it. I try my best to learn other viewpoints. But "As an empath", when I hear it, comes off similar to "as a humble person".
