This is a first run at this attempt to reign in advanced algorithms, how they vacuum up our data and are implemented by politicians with no accountability. I'm curious how other people feel about these ideas. They're written with state & local levels in mind, because that's where we could start 10/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
And if it's not possible because the system is just too complex, well that's too bad. We don't need more unaccountable complexity in our lives. You either need to innovate (I know, Silicon Valley hates doing that) 9/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
This means that before the public makes a decision, information should be disseminated to voters in at most a 1-2 page format. If you can't accomplish that, too bad, you don't have a right to a public contract. 8/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
Fourth, we deserve accountability. When these systems create discriminatory outcomes or impact people's well-being, they deserve restitution and the individual in charge of the system needs to be held accountable. That means that there needs to be an individual who is responsible for the outcome 7/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
Third, we deserve to know which factors are used in the decision making. If a cop is going to show up at my door because I was the victim of a crime in the past, I deserve to know. These policies used to be publicly available through laws and regulations, and hiding behind AI is unacceptable. 6/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
Second, we need to know what systems are able to observe us and what data they have access to. This information should be made available before the implementation decision, but should also be available in a database after the fact. Whatever they have access to will be used in future models. 5/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
First, a check on the system. Any implementation of AI systems should be put up to a popular vote in the impacted jurisdiction, it's not something that politicians can choose on our behalf. We are the ones whose data gets subsumed into the algorithmic machine, we get to make the choice. 4/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
I see several policy areas that come up throughout this discussion, and I think they can be bundled under a common topic of AI, what we give AI devs access to, how our governments interact with AI systems and where we, the people, get checks on this system. 3/x
Ranking Rizzler (@b-rando.bsky.social) reply parent
This was inspired by a great piece in @levernews.com, which of course I recommend people read and subscribe to. I also want to state up front that "AI" is a marketing term and not a clearly defined thing. Anyways, on with the policy ideas. 2/x www.levernews.com/rage-against...

We're in a time of new technology, new problems, new ways of obfuscating decision making. We need new rights, I'm thinking in real time about a "AI Bill of Rights" about how governments and contracted entities collect our data, use it, and make decisions about us. #ai #policy 1/x
