US Army (Retired). Politically Homeless. There is no longer a fight between D and R, but rather one between Constitution (freedom/rule of law/decency) and whatever this is that we now have.

Correct. That’s as plausible a plan as anything else.

Agreed. But his agenda goes further, faster if gets the courts to bless off on his coup
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Correct, but it does help him justify deporting Venezuelans under the AEA. He can bring this action to the Supreme Court to show that the US is, in fact, at war with Venezuela and get a favorable ruling.

GOP Rep. Thomas Massie filed a discharge petition today to force the disclosure of Justice Department investigative files related to the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Working with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, Massie now needs to persuade 216 additional House members to sign it.

What about if, instead of "you", it is the law that takes away your illegal authority to impose sweeping tariffs and returns that authority to its constitutional home, the Congress?

Yay, we should be out of debt by, let's say two weeks? Good job, Donnie

As a former Soldier and a former teacher, I think this is a terrible idea. Also, I'm old enough to remember when dozens of heavily armed, well trained cops watched a bunch of kids get slaughtered in Uvalde and did nothing to stop it.

NEW: Massie tells CNN that there is significant pressure from the White House to BLOCK the release of the Epstein files.

The single most important thing about this is release the Epstein files.

Harder to believe. These arguments aren't even working.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
This isn't so much about Ashli Babbitt. This is about forcing the military service chiefs to do, and publicly support, dishonorable acts. It's about eroding the sanctity of the oath they take and making military leadership more ethically pliable for even worse acts. There will be more of this
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
I did. My apologies. I think the point remains though.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Certainly there are no absolutes. Why I said “more” rather than “all”. But there is a reason why “it’s the economy, stupid” resonates, cycle after cycle as the top driver of votes.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
If you ID yourself as being left of communism, then we likely define freedom, and a whole host of things, very differently. Not knocking you, just pointing that out. Big, intrusive, powerful government, IMV, does not result in the expansion of personal freedoms, no matter how good the intentions.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
This I agree with. It is the basis for my original post that got some people all spun up. I'll leave it at that.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
That's the best I can do in 240 characters. But your point is valid about things are labeled.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair question, thank you. I guess what I mean is that there are fringes of both parties, IMO, that come across as being done with the Constitution. That "their way" is the right way and whatever it takes to make it happen is fair game. Means justify the ends. I don't think we can survive that.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
If that's what you heard me say? Then I'm not going to change your mind. Have a great weekend.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Good question and I don't really know the answer. It's easy to point to 2016, certainly by 2020 (J6 etc) and was loud and clear in 2024...but really, in hindsight, it probably goes back much further.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
*chill
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
You're sort of making my point. Perhaps hill out a bit? No one said any such thing.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
The fringes of both parties have to create purety tests. It's the same thinking that leads some jackass to call me a fascist simply because I don't agree with his every whim. It's the same thinking that led Dems, not GOP but DEMS, to torch Harris's campaign in Michigan and Wisconsin over Gaza.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
I believe that. And someday, if we survive this era and still have a country and Constitution, I'd be more than happy to explain why I believe that. You failed to read what I wrote about which "threat" is more dangerous and immediate.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Stop
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm all for it. And affordable health care and better schools and more housing options and the list goes on. But I have never been, nor will ever be a "means justifies the ends" kind of guy. How we go about these things matters. But... Let's save the Constitution first eh?
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
The Army taught me that when faced with multiple targets, you always engage the most immediate/dangerous threat first. IMHO, both MAGA and the far progressive left present threats to our democracy and freedoms, but MAGA is infinitely more immediate/dangerous.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
100% this 👆 I've long said the GOP (my old party) willingly went to a place from which it cannot return. Too many supposedly smart people have sent far too long trying to save it. Can't be done. So what comes next?
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
Let's be honest. You described American society at large. The $$ bottom line is more important to more people than is honor to country. Big reason we are in this mess.
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
There will be more of this and it's not about Ashli Babbitt. It's about coercing the service chiefs to do (and publicly support) things that besmirch their honor. The more he can force them to wallow in the mud, the dirtier they get. Normalization of the unethical is critical to his future plans
Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent

That's fair. I guess I would only say that GA, like any other state, would do better electing a politically moderate former Republican than a crazy MAGA sycophant simply because the Dem party supported a too left liberal who can't get elected there. But I understand your concerns. Peace.

Bbenn (@bbenn68.bsky.social) reply parent
They do indeed. Your point? Please tell me your point isn’t that every Soldier at any rank is supposed to know every facet of every law and be able to act/not act perfectly in every moment.

Haha, I’m not getting paid for converts. You think what you think. It’s cool

In the end, you may find that his personal politics are too far from yours to get your support. That's okay in my book. But I think you will also find that he is someone who would govern fairly for and in the best interests of, the people of GA. And no coups, which I think is a bonus.
