We shouldn't discount critical research conducted at small clinics if it meets basic standards. Someone's got to do the work. But to your point, if a doctor's claims don't pass true peer review, it's because there's no scientific basis for its claims, not because "big pharma" is hiding the truth.

Will this be the turning point if it doesn't happen tomorrow? Will the NG stand by, waiting for some hint of escalation and later claim it was on its way out until a so-called emergency arose?
What's to stop them from "accidentally" killing peaceful protesters caught in the crossfire? Or claiming there was "violence" that warranted a lethal response? This seems like a pretty effective deterrent against future protests, particularly if they use June 14th to set an example.
