Interesting & important reflections. Missing from the picture? The perspective of 'non-leadership' university staff. If NSS results have any validity, we're remarkably successful at creating levels of satisfaction that would make other large organisations & government envious. Might be a resource.

Very very good letter in the FT magazine this morning pinpointing what humans definitely do when we “learn” and why machine LLM “learning” isn’t that. (And also why LLMs take up so much more energy than we do for thinking.)

Human learning isn't like how machines learn. Merleau-Ponty pointed out that when we first tie our shoelaces, we follow instructions (and likely look at another human too). Left over right etc. But when we later tie our laces on the way to a job interview, we just embody all that learning. It's not even in our subconscious (until we get dementia). After all, when you learn to ride a bike with training wheels, you need those wheels. When you actually ride that bike later, those training wheels are not in your subconscious at all. They are gone. A bit like Wittgenstein's ladder, which we discard after climbing to a higher level. Imagine a large language model telling me how to tie my laces. It would look through every written piece about the process and start with left over right, or right over left, and would perform this giant search every time... for ever. Without

Another approach for Labour than full-bore retreat to 'yes, immigration is a problem, yes it is a squalid experiment, we hate business and commerce' is available and has worked in the past. www.theguardian.com/politics/200...

Not just historically - the million and a half Irish migrants to this country in the 19th century; the 120,000 Jewish people who came here before the first world war, largely fleeing persecution in Russia and eastern Europe; the 160,000 Poles who settled here after the second world war, soon followed by large numbers of Italians and then workers from the West Indies and South Asia and, more recently, significant migration from other European countries within the EU. All these migrants are part of the rich fabric of our nation, every bit as British and valued as any other member of our society. We also see the positive contribution of contemporary migrants all about us today. In the health service, a million people employed, nearly a third of them first or second generation immigrants. In 2003, one-third of all work permits issued were for health service workers. In financial services - a sector which now employs 300,000 and brings billions of pounds into our economy - migrants play a key role in some of the most skilled jobs in the world. We will not turn our back on these or other migrants contributing so much to our economy and our society. Without them, London would not be the financial capital of Europe. Without them, how would the NHS actually work? And when people are fleeing persecution, from Rwanda, Kosovo, Zimbabwe, British people extend their generosity.

There was a time when mainstream politicians and leaders of various stripes would have called this out for what it is, far right racism Now it’s being regularly and nonchalantly peddled my members of the shadow front bench in the House of Commons

Currently reading Silent Spring (published 1962), so this story hits particularly hard. Of course we’ve moved on in 63 years, and novel chemicals are more regulated, but I guess we have scaled up everything dramatically so the problem is just as serious overall. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There's a lot wrong with British democracy, but three things we should defend with iron determination: - no party involvement in appointing judges; - non-partisan drawing of constituency boundaries; - limited party spending by comparison with the US - though this is now very much at risk.

I beleive we will see a scaled down version of this plan, that would not amount to full occupation of Gaza City, Dir al-Balah and the Mawasi (these are the 14% of Gaza Strip where civilians have been concentrated in). In other words, more of the same. And "the same" is starvation and genocide.

Important paragraph in here: faith groups have been vocally critical of Israel's recent actions in Gaza since it began, but the ELCA has joined a growing number of Christian denominations that are specifically describing it as a genocide. Earlier this week, a global group of Quakers did the same.
