Here it was over the Golden Gate Bridge so there were photos on the front page of the SF paper the next day. I can see the bridge if I walk across the street. I would have stayed up if I'd known. I don't think there'd ever been one here before. You're really lucky you got to see it and get photos!
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
Really amazing and wondrous!
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
That's very exciting, I wish I'd see in the SF Bay Area. The one time it was very bright and nearby to where I am, I had given up and gone to bed.

So neat they were able to figure out how to communicate with you and at the same time you were open to learning what they were trying to tell you. Wonderful how it's been working out. π
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a really cool story! Glad you knew how to treat it and were able to send it on its way with its fellow ducks when it grew.
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
They clearly had some sort of thing going on. The mallard would watch the squirrel and the squirrel kept its eyes on the duck.
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
Interesting. Maybe there was some food deficiency or maybe some fungal or bacterial thing going around. Good that it seems to be gone or at least lessened.

That's wonderful. I think I've known for some time that walnuts have some healing qualities. Great it worked with the squirrels.
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
Neat to see one walking along on the open beach like that. Certainly was hoping for some treats from the fisherman. Nice photo!

Very sweet and wonderful that the walnuts you were helping to feed them really improved their health. Ms Muffin and Ms Pretty Bird!
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
Your stories about the squirrels reminded me a little bit of the posts I made yesterday with the Mallard and the Squirrel. They almost seemed to know each other and it really seemed like they were playing. I think I've seen that same squirrel a number of times in that same place with the mallards.
betsy cooley (@betsycooley.bsky.social) reply parent
Ms Pretty Bird certainly does have it all figured out. It's astonishing how close she's become to you.

thousands of them in the bay. There were many more than usual in Berkeley and Albany and also very large numbers spread out on the bay so seems like migrating from further North, heading South for the winter. I'll see what I see this week. If they're gone, then they were migrating. π

Thanks for all the likes and reposts!!! I really love the herons and egrets. The pelicans were fishing. The water was shallow so they fly a little bit in the air looking for fish, then scoop them up in large pouches. In deep water, they fly high up and dive down. Someone posted photos of

How rude!!! The interrelations between them are fascinating, especially since you spend so much time with them in a discrete area and can observe them day-to-day. I spend more time now observing how certain shorebirds interact with each other and sometimes it reminds me of the Birdie Buffet.

I have not seen the burrowink owles dere. It is a protected area that is fenced and has very dense vegetation that I'm sure is intentionally designed to protect the owles from people and wildlife. Some people have posted here they've seen them at Chavez Park and I have yet to see them there, either.

The mudflats start at the entrance of the Albany Bulb, on the right side across from the parking lot for Golden Gate Fields (which no longer is in operation). They extend alongside 580 about half-way to the exit to Costco.

That's neat. Mine have all been rescues, although Chloe and Riley went directly from Milo Foundation to a foster family up on a hill overlooking the Bay in Point Richmond. There was the mom with 5 kittens and none of them had even opened their eyes so their early life was with a loving family.

Maybe. We used to have 10 or 20 hanging out at Marina next to where I live, but lately there have been hardly any. I have seen them at Berkeley Aquatic Park and a ton of them in area between Albany Mudflats and Costco in Richmond.
