I saw some analysis the other day that showed that since Google put the AI summaries at the top of the search results, fewer people are actually scrolling down and clicking on any search results to read information there. They just skim the AI summary and are done.
My video about how LLMs are not search engines has led to many, MANY comments telling me that I should be using Perplexity. Some insisting that Perplexity does not hallucinate. Out of a list of 26 papers it just provided me (in "Research" mode) 4 were real. FOUR. 85% hallucination rate.

I have never seen so many public servants protest the mismanagement of a government. Trumpists will point to this as proof of the deep state, but the reality is that these are professionals who are desperately trying to get the public to understand how bad things are.
If this continues, then I think that whenever I run out of my current supplies, that's it. It doesn't make sense to try and restock if I have to either absorb the higher costs or pass them on to customers. But I'm in the privileged position of only doing this for fun. This will ruin people.
I know we don't exactly move the needle on the GDP or whatever, but this is devastating for small art & craft businesses. Hey, do you like yarn? Do you know where your favorite dyer's yarn base comes from? How about the little bits and pieces they use to make charms, bookmarks, stuffies...?
Among the families around here I think it's mostly the latter - high-earning fathers (mostly), mothers (mostly) who don't need to work and are therefore available to homeschool.
This is what I think about a lot, too. I think it connects to the stuff going on around traditional gender roles, too. Among the families I see moving to homeschooling, there's like a horseshoe shape - one parent either can't afford to work (childcare too expensive), or *can* afford to stay home.
I know smartypantses like you are thinking way more important things about this! I'm just a mum of school-aged kids scrolling Facebook groups of lefty parents pulling their kids out of school and wondering how tf they get by on a single income 😅
And not just the future of institutions but, like, the idea of any sort of standardization in education, that we would all have some shared knowledge or learning experience or whatnot. The reasons public education became a thing in the first place.
I am seeing more and more parents turn to homeschooling and while I think people should have that option and it can work for many families, it makes me pretty worried about the future of public education.
