It didn't take the Nazis long- maybe a year after Hitler took power, laws were passed against mocking or disparaging Hitler, Nazi leaders, Germany, and later against general "grumbling". People who drunkenly mouthed off in a bar were turned in to the gestapo, and you might be sent off to a camp.

Haffner's book is basically his inner battles with dealing with the Nazi takeover. It's quite resonant with the daily struggles we all have now- accede? Give up? Fight and resist? Ignore it all? It is heartbreaking and tragic, and we may have a long way to go

I read "Defying Hitler", by Sebastian Haffner (highly recommended)a memoir of 1930's Germany. He writes about his journey in Nazi Germany. He finally determined that the Nazis were an occupying force that had destroyed the Germany he knew, and he had to leave, he left (for good) in 1938

This book, Defying Hitler, by Sebastian Haffner, is one man's chronicle of the Nazi years. An intimate, honest attempt to come to grips with how Germans dealt with the takeover of their country. I found much resonance with the struggles we are all currently facing. A compelling and tragic story
