I read "Defying Hitler", by Sebastian Haffner (highly recommended)a memoir of 1930's Germany. He writes about his journey in Nazi Germany. He finally determined that the Nazis were an occupying force that had destroyed the Germany he knew, and he had to leave, he left (for good) in 1938

I’m not familiar enough with German history to know if support of Nazism was geographically evenly distributed. I suppose it was. That would be one difference with today, where there is a definite (and historical) geographical divide in political affiliation.

Lots of Blue dots in Red states, and most big cities in Red states are majority Blue. And there are lots of MAGA rural counties in Blue states. I have friends and family in Red states. But I think Red states have gone too far down the wrong path, and we cannot go down with them.

The first thing the Nazis did was complete their internal takover- that happened over a period of 5 years (1933-38)- they "nazified" politics (no party but the Nazis) the civil administration, courts, schools, media, and it became harder to hide your dissent.

I was just glancing outside after reading your post and all the others this morning, and thinking, 'it's a beautiful Sunday morning in America and look at where our thoughts and minds are.' It's just heartbreaking.

Haffner's book is basically his inner battles with dealing with the Nazi takeover. It's quite resonant with the daily struggles we all have now- accede? Give up? Fight and resist? Ignore it all? It is heartbreaking and tragic, and we may have a long way to go
