It's also because people away from Indian Country may have missed the historic realignment underway in the relationship between Native peoples and the majority culture and political authority. Native peoples are reclaiming their power; that's a good thing, and recognizing it is really not optional.

Totally agree with this. We’ve been here before, and recently. Early in the Iraq war, Bush lied, Cheney lied, Rumsfeld lied, and at the Times, Post, many other places, opposition was voiced in sonorous pronouncements from ivory towers. Gutter-fighting opposition was needed. Now even more.

A key point we try to get at here: Media is covering Trump's militarization of cities AS IF IT'S ACTUALLY ABOUT CRIME. But it isn't. It's about the CONSOLIDATION OF AUTHORITARIAN POWER. Yet many headlines and analyses are all about whether it's true that crime is as bad as Trump says it is.
