Content of the orange ones is weird... none of them get close to 40% even in "their own" age group. Would be interested to see, say "hit me baby one more time" graph, would expect it to be a lot higher in the orange category

A vital maxim in education is richer kids will generally be fine, but if you screw up it's disadvantaged kids that suffer.

On board with this *but* it depends on the purpose of what we are doing the multiplication for But if I wanted to multiplicate accurately I'd probably reach for the calculator

@adamboxereducation.bsky.social whilst I agree with a lot of the changes in the 2010s it’s a shame to hear NG describe grid method multiplication as a nonsense method. It’s grounded in understanding the structure of the maths and is based on an area model - the most concrete example we have.

My advice was "it may be worth an appeal to see if you get more leniency the second time round" Turns out I was right!
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
BUT LOOK - we have some many inequities in our maths exams: kids who get the more expensive calculators get easier marks, kids whose parents can afford frivolous appeals will have grades changed
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
However, I emailed the parent and said "you could give it a go and see if you get a more lenient marker" Behold, the grade has changed!
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
I appreciate these are wrong, before I get people suggesting I want marks for wrong answers again.
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social)
reviewed a gcse paper. my view was harsh marking but that i could see why dropped marks. one paper had 4 marks dropped for what I viewed as stringent reasons, such as fraction lines not going all the way across and 2hrs 45 mins being written as 2.45hrs.

aim with this sequence is guided discovery on benefits of both tests, so we literally go from "so why do I need the second derivative test?", to "so why do I need the first derivative test?", to "but the tests disagree!", to "so now I see the point!"

#mathstoday #alevelmaths I explored classifying stationary pts with yr 12 today I asked them to do a 1st derivative test and a 2nd derivative test for the following sequence of functions: y = x³ - 3x (❤️❤️❤️) y = x³ + 3x² + 3x + 1 y = x⁴ - 2x² + 1 y = x⁴ y = x²/4 + 4/x²

Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
And comes back to, is this what we really want marks to be dropped for?
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
It's defined in the spec as something students should recognise as meaning initial velocity in mechanics
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
it's still a vector we had one lose a mark for not putting brackets round their coordinates... I'm OK with this! but i dont think describing graph translations has vector notation as an accepted convention, nor is it written anywhere that it is
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
However I acknowledge that good exam technique would have been to literally re-write the bit they were trying to show. My Q is "is this what we want our exams to be penalising?". I don't but maybe others do
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
On the mechanics one, it's in the spec that students need to understand that u stands for the initial velocity and can be given in questions without explanation. So u=0 is literally saying "the initial velocity is zero", i don't see how that isn't stating the original request
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
A vector has direction and magnitude and this has direction and magnitude. There is no mistaking its specificity. Your example is not equivalent, it doesnt have correct mathematical language and it isn't specific.
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
What's not correct about the translation?
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
That's not equivalent
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, my argument is that "these are the conditions we are operating under but does it differentiate between students' aptitude in maths?" - i dont think i agree with the emphasis on what is being tested here
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
In other news, showing something begins from rest in mechanics, it's not enough to show u=0, you have to state "so it begins from rest" afterwards. I mean REALLY.
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm led to believe it wouldn't have got the marks, yet I don't see the difference between this and writing in vector notation. fwiw I do the same as you but I feel like im lucky that I follow the whim of this particular examiner.
Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social)
Disappointing that we see evidence of overly pedantic marking in AQA A-level again. Remember that these are kids' futures and if they miss out on a university place for writing "translation of +4 units in the x direction" instead of as a vector they still know what they are doing 👎 #alevelmaths

Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
In laws got rid of their bath and we coped with it. However, we definitely were put off by a property that didnt have a bath when we moved house as there's a difference between coping and convenience. I'd get rid of our garage and I dont understand why it's seen as an essential

so thinking about the top Ss, we spend a lot of time teaching them detail on things that they can already do they spend a lot of time practising stuff they can already do now think about the bottom they spend a lot of time struggling and not practising what if we flipped that?

Sam Blatherwick (@blatherwicksam.bsky.social) reply parent
bit i struggle with is 1) validity of assessment, if done regularly, and testing 'whole body' of mathematics to check it's the right move to make. so how regular should regularly be?
