the only other possible contender, at least on the dem side who has expressed interest and would really shake things up, might be nirav shah who was the state cdc director during the pandemic and was/is pretty broadly popular and everyone knows who he is.
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
all four are declared. pingree has raised the most as of the last campaign finance deadline
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
just this one which is basically a name rec poll. i dont think it means much yet other than king is absolutely benefiting from people thinking he is his dad because there is no world where 80% of people know who he is lol
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
his favorability among dems statewide is like -35
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
its possible. i would be a little surprised if he did. he likely knows he cant win a statewide primary, let alone such a crowded. and then the independent lane has already been claimed by rick bennett.

golden announced a few months ago he decided to run for reelection in cd-2 rather than going for governor.

which cuts both ways of course. she can be an incredible voice on palestine with the trade off of being only a rep. its a pretty different strategy than aoc (or even zohran w/re: policing for example)
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
something ive thought about quite a bit is that she is able to be so good, because she has no desire for higher office, and so is able to fully commit to the politics of her local constituency.
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
kind of ironic for all of the evil social media has done (and that people who only get their news off it are morons), that if you only follow traditional media you also have no idea whats going on in the world either

I do not deny the existence of class interests as such. I do deny class distinctions always being the most important and salient divisions in any given circumstances and I do deny that having class interests addressed will automatically supersede deeply seated preexisting bigotries on the whole.

the 2018 dem primary had 126,000 votee cast. so like 5% of the primary electorate was at the rally lmfao
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
if you had a rally in new york city that had 1% of its metro area it would be like 200k people if you want a sense
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social)
i feel like its worth noting that 6000 people is 1% of portlands greater metro area or 0.5% of the states population

during bernie's speech, he said one of the reasons he wants graham to join him in the senate, is because graham will vote to block further aid to israel and that we need more of those voices in congress!

probably the biggest applause moments (at least where it felt like from where i was sitting in the front section) were this abortion line, his gaza line, and then when troy talked about rights for the wabanaki. the mood was economic populism, but also one infused with justice for all
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
they shook hands and hugged at the end. i can't remember if he specifically said like "graham for senate" or not (he might have) but that was the implication at least

i feel like maximal humor needs to occur by trump dying after the dems retake either chamber of congress next year, and so vance can't get a VP confirmed

i think thats a pretty reasonable source of skepticism, but fwiw his district for state house is r+20 and is held by the gop house leader, and the senate seats is like r+30. doesn't shock me he didnt bother, a lot of the people who run for those kinds of seats here are basically placeholders
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
any of them have their constituencies and areas they would do well in, but idk if it would be enough to overcome statewide oystermentum. whereas mills probably just does assad numbers in the dem core and thats the ball game. unless people think shes too old/graham really juices young voters
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
i could see breen, frey or fecteau being the leading candidate, but all would have a much harder time against platner. my money rn is if mills stays out platner will win the nom, if she does enter, she probably wins
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
names you get seen thrown around in the press as potentially interested candidates include former state senator cathy breen, speaker of the house ryan fecteau, AG aaron frey, dan kleban who owns a brewery and the chief of the penobscot nation kirk francis

her popularity dipped a bit this year cause of the trump stuff, but her favorability here is second only to angus. also easy to forget she is from rural cd2 and so is able to do better in northwestern maine than other dems while still bringing votes in the south/midcoast
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
i dont think schumer wants mills because of palestine, i think he wants her because shes very good at winning elections in maine and is very popular

this is a great article, with a lot of bits people are pulling out, but i wanna point to this. were like the size of the bronx, we dont have that many people and everyone does kinda know everyone. ME politics world is even smaller. there being this much groundswell of grassroots people says a lot

In the richest country on Earth, hospitals are closing en masse. In rural Maine you’re driving an hour to the nearest birthing center. The hospital in Blue Hill where I was born is closed. It’s a disaster brought on by decades of pure greed, and nothing short of Medicare for All can turn the tide.

for sure. maine had a similar back to the land movement as vermont in the 70s, but at a smaller scale. so there's already a pretty strong crunchy undercurrent. then you add in no longer needing to live in boston for jobs and the feeling youre talking about. its a recipe for big demographic shifts
rose (@breadnrosie.bsky.social) reply parent
i have a theory that maine is going to vermont-ify over the next couple decades due to post-covid in migration and the advent of wfh. we're 8th in per capita net migration and the state economic report on who is moving here its all woke people with masters degrees from mass
