I genuinely felt strange about not being able to see the horizon in the years I lived in Melbourne. So it’s not the specificity of place maybe, it’s the experience of expecting *some* relationship with the natural world…. Which some cities do have.

Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social) reply parent
It seems to me that the predominantly “progressive” mode of Hollywood storytelling has in fact helped to obscure the horrors of late stage capitalism and American imperialism. Even if the artists themselves, individually, sought to do the opposite. Because of how it is all set up. Am I wrong?!
Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social) reply parent
But while the kids are learning and parents are bonding with them over compassionate, inspiring stories, and everyone’s spending and making money, the oligarchs behind it all are shaping the world in more direct ways. Terrible ways. Without remorse. So where does that leave the artists and the art?
Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social) reply parent
Whether intentionally or not I don’t know… but it’s about how collective punishment is indefensible. That’s literally what those flashy, fun musicals for kids are about. How you can’t punish the children of villains and they must have equal opportunity. And it works! It’s good. And artists did that.
Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve watched a lot of Disney content recently, in fact, having a 5-year-old who is enraptured… and I could write an entire thesis on the ways in THE DESCENDANTS trilogy is humanist, anti-fascist storytelling. There’s even a solid allegory for Israel’s treatment of Palestinians at the heart of it.
Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social) reply parent
There are many aspects to it but storytelling is my field, so I keep circling around a notion that art and myth-making must be somehow and fundamentally separated from the requirements of capitalism. Because even when artists have made truthful work, their efforts have been used as a smokescreen.
Briony Kidd (@brionykidd.bsky.social)
Amazing but fitting that in the existential struggle for the United States, the Disney Company has emerged as a key battleground. The global symbol of American success, where culture and capitalism became irrevocably intertwined. Everything leading up to this moment should be questioned. All of it.
