Anyway, this building was demolished at about what would have been the 161st anniversary of the opening of the church and at about what was the 174th or the 182nd anniversary of the construction of the building. More details (and notes) here: noveltytheater.net/buildings/st...

The German church remained on North 5th Street into the 1960s. In 1967 the building was bought by the Spanish Calvary Baptist Church of Williamsburg.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social) reply parent
It is likely that the front section of the church was constructed in 1864. You can see that front section in this photo from 2005. A spire was added sometime, maybe in the 1880s. It survived into the 1940s, and may have been removed due to a fire in 1957.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social) reply parent
In 1850 a new District 2 school building was erected on the south side of North 5th Street at the corner of Driggs, and the old school was possibly converted into the new city prison at that time.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social) reply parent
The jail (sometimes described as the North Side Court House or "the cells")was constructed in 1851, but itself may have been a conversion from the original District 2 school. Secondary sources say that the school (now PS 17) was established in 1843 in a brick building on the north side of North 5th.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social) reply parent
St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church was a German congregation, established in February, 1864 in a tenement house on North 3rd. That same year, the congregation purchased the former Williamsburgh city jail on North 5th Street between Driggs and Roebling and converted the building into a church.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social)
This was the former St. Matthew German Evangelical Lutheran Church. I never wrote about this building because the origins were always murky. There were 3 churches that were built on North 5th Street between 1850 and 1865 (this one, Calvary PE and the North 5th ME), and they were often mixed up. 🧵

As a historic preservation professional, wow. Just, wow.
Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely a conversion from an 1851 building, and possibly the 1851 building was a conversion of an 1843 building. I'll post details.

Brooklyn11211 (@brooklyn11211.bsky.social)
Didn’t realize this Church was coming down. Building might have dated to the 1840s. Was once the Williamsburgh town jail, later a German Evangelical Lutheran Church. (Not 100% clear they were the same building.) newyorkyimby.com/2025/08/demo...
