My university just had one of the professors in comp sci / engineering post an e-mail to the university list encouraging students to apply for a job with ICE because of the "benefits". I was appalled, and I was not alone - numerous other professors, students, and staff expressed their outrage.

My thought exactly. All the imbeciles who were up in arms over the change *may* visit CB *once* because of this, but then they'll fade into the woodwork again (at least in this respect). Whereas folks like me who *might* have started patronizing CB occasionally will now stay the hell away.
If this happens, there will be some folks who will likely be able to (grudgingly) pay for it. (Depending upon what you mean by "expensive". Hundreds of dollars? Thousands?) But far too many won't have that option. Combined with masking being anathema, the virus is gonna have a field day.

I had a supernumerary tooth in the floor of my nose when I was a boy. It apparently was not supplied (or at least not sufficiently supplied) by nerves or blood vessels & started to decay, so had to be removed. My very first surgery.

In southern California as well as throughout much of North America, horses - native to the continent! - were among the most (if not the most) common large mammals in a wide variety of ecosystems. They were only supplanted by the arrival of the Eurasian immigrant Bison after ~195,000 years ago.
For #FossilFriday: fossils of the ice age horse Equus scotti from the El Casco region of Riverside County, CA, US. These fossils date from 2.2 to 1.2 million years, & are under study as part of this weekend's #PaleoCon2025 conference at the Western Science Center in Hemet, CA, US. 🐎🧪

Remains of Australopithecus were not previously known from Ledi-Geraru. These discoveries demonstrate that as many as *four* hominin lineages were living in eastern Africa between 3.0 and 2.5 million years ago: early Homo, Paranthropus, A. garhi, and the new Australopithecus from Ledi-Geraru.
