I can't know for sure, of course, but my best guess is that they're in shock, not making their best decisions. It must be quite the whirlwind.
I'd have to think about it more to speak about it in an educated way. Imo, the sensationalism isn't the root cause, but it makes lots of sense it could be a contributing factor. And maybe a significant one. The fantasy of being famous forever would certainly no longer be there.
Imo, it's such a concrete way to be an ally to school shooting victims and not participate in the sensationalism that isn't in the service of the kids, but of the news orgs. There are better ways to bring awareness to the shootings and the pressing need to find ways to prevent them.
Um, of course we want to worry about preventing school shootings. I'm not sure why you would assume I think otherwise. Both parents and kids are no doubt in shock, not making their best decisions. Let's support all of them and default to not participating in potential further retraumatization.

I'm a trauma psychotherapist - stop interviewing kids right after a shooting to get ratings!!! Telling their story might help them or it might be really harmful. They need trauma-informed support to help them process. Support the kids: don't watch these interviews.
