I have an absolute horror of execution to start with. I do find there's something strangely sanitised about the scene - the exquisite light and vibrant colour. The thought of what the scene will look like a few moments later makes my blood run cold.

The only thing to check is whether they're still white all the way through - if they're going brown they are getting ready to spore and won't taste great (though still not poisonous). This looks like a young specimen so should be fine. I'm very envious!

Ohhhhh... giant puffballs are absolutely delicious! Peel, slice, coat in egg and breadcrumbs and fry in bacon fat.... I don't eat bacon any more but a nice cooking oil would do it. Also, the giant puffball is one of the few fungi that you can't possibly mistake for anything else.

You can really tell the difference - it's mostly size. The actual stems are much fatter; generally but not always the leaves are bigger and generally but not always the berries are bigger. I also prefer the flavour of wild ones which to me is lesss acidic than cultivated ones.

A lot of blackberries in the hedgerow these days are escaped garden cultivarswhich were bred to ripen as a summer fruit. Later you will see the smaller wild varieties which last to the end of September. All yummy of course!

There are c.95,000 inpatients. A proportion of people in hospital whether staff, patient or visitor will catch something there.
