It's democratically unhealthy, removes agency from the public, and undermines free and frank advice. So yes Minister, you can make roads from candy floss if you want, but it is not a great idea...
Che Tibby (@chetibby.bsky.social) reply parent
I am to provide free, frank, and politically neutral advice, *even where that advice runs contrary to political imperative*. Of course, in the real world it's never that simple. But making the starting point "I do whatever the Minister says" is evidence of the ongoing corporatisation of the service
Che Tibby (@chetibby.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, then that is their perogative, and they can answer to the ballot box for their actions. Again, Westminster Democracy. But, I am paid by the public, and while I must conform to hierarchy, I am not required to kowtow to that Minister. In fact, quite the opposite.
Che Tibby (@chetibby.bsky.social) reply parent
My job as a public servant is too maintain the confidence of both Government and Opposition that I'll deliver neutral advice to whomever is holding the decision-making reins. If the Minister chooses to ignore that advice, or take advice from another source (read lobbyists)?
Che Tibby (@chetibby.bsky.social) reply parent
There are elected reps accountable to the public, *the actual boss*, and public servants also paid from the public purse. The job of the Government is to make informed decisions, a major information source of which is eclectic to be a politically neutral public service.
Che Tibby (@chetibby.bsky.social)
I heard someone at work the other day refer to a Minister of the Crown ad 'their boss'. So here's the thing. The Minister, with respect is no ones boss. They are an elected official paid by the public to make decisions. This is fundamental to Westminster Democracy.
