A modern Batman Beyond game would be absolutely perfect, I reckon. So much they could do with it.

It's my birthday in less than a week. That means my birthday week starts today, I've decided. If anyone feels like being kind and donating to help me buy things like neck braces (an absolute godsend, I've discovered), a cool new cane, a Green Lantern t-shirt or Shinobi, you are welcome to do so at
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Listen, it's been a hard day. I'm slagged, man.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
It's 10% nostalgia and 90% original DC characters that to this day almost all only exist within this canon. The Timm/Dini DCAU has always been some of DC's best output, but Batman Beyond is an actual masterwork in adaptation, balancing nostalgia and freshness, and mixing up the source material
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
This is my first time ever watching Batman Beyond, and I've honestly never seen anything like it. Terry's very obviously a teenager's dream in superhero form, cos who doesn't want to be frickin' Batman. But not only did they make it work, they made it work as a superb potential future Gotham.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
Batman Beyond feels like the creators wrote Batman comic fanfic when they were 12 or 13, where they wanted to be Batman but without replacing Batman, or creating yet another Robin as a self-insert. Then spent years creating a Batman canon where this premise was uniquely phenomenal.

Imagine what I, the horror developer, can make with this cute lil engine. IMAGINE HOW I WILL DESTROY YOU

Okay I've decided that when this comes out I'm gonna make it my entire personality for a good while.

Oh shit I just remembered that now I'm financially stable again I can buy the two books of yours I missed out on. My Eric LaRocca shelf will be complete once more!
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm aroace. I have ZERO interest in most of this stuff. I personally have no interest in buying sexual content. But the idea that someone else can just come along and say 'and now you can't' is terrifying, and should terrify everyone.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Creativity at its core is continuously under threat. If it's not smut games, it'll be something else. It HAS been something else in the past, many times. They're all rooted in the same thing. Censorship and control. Fight it, always.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
And also just in general how utterly dystopian and terrifying it is that they're simply able to block the legal commercial distribution of any type of art they want because it suits them. You can even strip away 'mature content' and 'adult devs' and THAT is the issue.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, people we don't like are allowed to make art and I've always hated any sentiment to the contrary, because who gets to decide? We can choose not to buy it, and obviously hate speech is a different beast altogether, but censorship is censorship. We have to unite against puritanical censorship.

Heavy Hearts dev Dammitbird received the following notice from Steam, noting โyour app has failed our review because we're unable to support the Early Access model of development for a game with mature themesโ This strikes me as overcompliance and censorious on Steamโs part

Oh he's somehow never really made it to UK shores, at least to my knowledge anyway. That just makes this garbage even worse. Kinda funny that the only cool thing in the art is the dragon.

Ah okay, good to know. Both my current games are at least 10 years old and very occasionally a thread will get a bump and I'd rather have control over whether or not a random angry forum user can get it locked haha

Apropos of nothing, I just want to thank every author I've worked with over the years who HASN'T hurled abuse at me for a rejection. Occasionally for the NSP I have to reject one of the best things I've ever read purely because it would not sound good as an audio drama. Other times, context, etc.

I accept that growing up, there are things your child can do that can be unforgiveable. Personally, it would take something astronomical to make me stop LOVING them even if I couldn't forgive them, but again, not a parent. 'Being a troubled 8 year old' is not that.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
Fuck me actually okay I didn't know any of this and this guy's made me disgustingly, sadly angry. How do you treat your kid like that? I don't even have kids myself, but any parent who wouldn't literally take a bullet for their young child is a failure of a parent.

Also as a, I guess you'd say, gender-non-traditional person myself, people like Eric Nally always give me that extra confidence boost I need to remind myself that I can still be awesome and stand in the spotlight without checking certain boxes. Freddie is applauding from rock n roll heaven.

Foxy Shazam are to glam rock what Ghost are to operatic metal. Would absolutely love to see Eric Nally and Tobias Forge collaborate on something actually.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
I think I am literally in love with Foxy Shazam. Can't believe it's taken me this long to get into them. I'd even heard them in Peacemaker S1 and somehow only listened to that one song, but they are so me-coded it's unreal.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
@jamesgunn.bsky.social What IS a Crabjoy?
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
I really, really wanna learn how to sing at least competently. I can't sing at all but I'm convinced I could with lessons. Not WELL, but competently.

Haha I'm 18 hours in at the half-way point though. I think I'm just slow I guess. I am doing absolutely everything I can though, and I do revisit scenes 'just in case' a lot.

Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Thematically. I was having a pretty tough time in life and it was a bit hard going. Visually it's beautiful.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
This was actually something I liked about it, it was finally a horror visual novel that had a really meaty singular plot instead of relying on repeated playthroughs for the horror to work.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
In fairness, I am officially the world's slowest gamer, but I did remember those 18 hours being at a fairly normal pace. I guess maybe the 15/34 achievements I'm on might not actually reflect half way through, but it still feels like I've a ways to go. Even if it's a week, it's FANTASTIC though.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
It is AMAZING though. I had to stop playing it at the time because it's SO dark though haha.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay maybe 18.5 hours BUT STILL.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent

This literally happened to Crazy Frog but in reverse. He had a dick, then they replaced him with a version without a dick.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
(and yeah this was prompted by something but nothing to do with our community or anything, just other work elsewhere, so don't worry about some secret asshole in the horror community or anything, just made me think about how freaking cool you guys are)
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Because this is what professional writers do. And I don't just mean 'writers with publishing credits', I mean 'people who enjoy writing and also behave professionally'. Anyway I don't say enough just how freaking awesome the horror author community is. SO few bad eggs.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
I had to give @haileypiperfights.bsky.social editorial feedback once with some critique for a story some years back, and I was bricking it because Hailey is one of my writing idols, and can basically do no wrong in my eyes. This story just needed some discussion. We just had a nice convo about it.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
If you invite it, for sure! I can understand not wanting to just be hit with feedback at like 1am on Bluesky when you're in recreational mode or something, but in a professional context, from someone you submitted TO, absolutely.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
As an editor AND a writer, I often find myself having to give editorial notes to authors who I know objectively are better writers than me. Good, professional authors realize that editing, and tailoring a story for a given outlet, is a different skill to writing, and they don't lash out about that.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
There was one author in particular who is one of my absolute favorite horror authors of all time, who had a rejection some years ago. Has he ever held it against us or even been slightly rude? No. Because that's what professionals do. Would I welcome subs from him again? In a heartbeat.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
We also cannot always personally explain our decisions to hundreds of authors a month because again, the NSP is a business and and we have to maximize what we spend our paid time on. You're all incredibly respectful of this, and I am immensely grateful for it.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
We have the best interests of two groups in mind; 1) David and the NSP, a company that can't afford to just burn money on stories that will not work on the show. And the authors, selected AND rejected, whose stories we have an obligation to treat with respect.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
It's very rare that a story reaches me or Jessica and we reject it because it's a bad story. And I can genuinely count on less than 10 fingers the number of authors who've been rude or abusive about this. Because most of you are grown-ass adult professionals who know we love you regardless.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social)
Apropos of nothing, I just want to thank every author I've worked with over the years who HASN'T hurled abuse at me for a rejection. Occasionally for the NSP I have to reject one of the best things I've ever read purely because it would not sound good as an audio drama. Other times, context, etc.

In the Light of a Setting Sun is a rules-lite game of bigger-than-life cowpokes on an unforgiving frontier. It it, you can play as cowherds on a long cattle drive, gunslingers solving problems in dusty border towns, or no-good outlaws on the run from a bloodthirsty sheriff. (1/?)
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
I barely play TTRPGs. They always look fun, but I almost never find anything where I go 'yeah, this needs to be part of my life'. This is that game. Genuinely there day one. And it comes out right before my birthday so I can MAKE my friends play it immediately.

Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh that sounds VERY loose from what I'm just reading, maybe Moore hadn't gotten as far as working out why Thunderbolt would do a heel turn before he was forced to turn him into Ozymandias. I would 1000% buy a redo of Watchmen as a DC Elseworlds using the Charleston characters.
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
Wait so who was Ozymandias going to be?
Oli A. White (@childdog.bsky.social) reply parent
