It's 10% nostalgia and 90% original DC characters that to this day almost all only exist within this canon. The Timm/Dini DCAU has always been some of DC's best output, but Batman Beyond is an actual masterwork in adaptation, balancing nostalgia and freshness, and mixing up the source material
This is my first time ever watching Batman Beyond, and I've honestly never seen anything like it. Terry's very obviously a teenager's dream in superhero form, cos who doesn't want to be frickin' Batman. But not only did they make it work, they made it work as a superb potential future Gotham.
Batman Beyond feels like the creators wrote Batman comic fanfic when they were 12 or 13, where they wanted to be Batman but without replacing Batman, or creating yet another Robin as a self-insert. Then spent years creating a Batman canon where this premise was uniquely phenomenal.
Imagine what I, the horror developer, can make with this cute lil engine. IMAGINE HOW I WILL DESTROY YOU

I'm aroace. I have ZERO interest in most of this stuff. I personally have no interest in buying sexual content. But the idea that someone else can just come along and say 'and now you can't' is terrifying, and should terrify everyone.
Creativity at its core is continuously under threat. If it's not smut games, it'll be something else. It HAS been something else in the past, many times. They're all rooted in the same thing. Censorship and control. Fight it, always.
And also just in general how utterly dystopian and terrifying it is that they're simply able to block the legal commercial distribution of any type of art they want because it suits them. You can even strip away 'mature content' and 'adult devs' and THAT is the issue.
Yeah, people we don't like are allowed to make art and I've always hated any sentiment to the contrary, because who gets to decide? We can choose not to buy it, and obviously hate speech is a different beast altogether, but censorship is censorship. We have to unite against puritanical censorship.
Heavy Hearts dev Dammitbird received the following notice from Steam, noting “your app has failed our review because we're unable to support the Early Access model of development for a game with mature themes” This strikes me as overcompliance and censorious on Steam’s part

I accept that growing up, there are things your child can do that can be unforgiveable. Personally, it would take something astronomical to make me stop LOVING them even if I couldn't forgive them, but again, not a parent. 'Being a troubled 8 year old' is not that.

Thematically. I was having a pretty tough time in life and it was a bit hard going. Visually it's beautiful.
This was actually something I liked about it, it was finally a horror visual novel that had a really meaty singular plot instead of relying on repeated playthroughs for the horror to work.
In fairness, I am officially the world's slowest gamer, but I did remember those 18 hours being at a fairly normal pace. I guess maybe the 15/34 achievements I'm on might not actually reflect half way through, but it still feels like I've a ways to go. Even if it's a week, it's FANTASTIC though.
It is AMAZING though. I had to stop playing it at the time because it's SO dark though haha.

Because this is what professional writers do. And I don't just mean 'writers with publishing credits', I mean 'people who enjoy writing and also behave professionally'. Anyway I don't say enough just how freaking awesome the horror author community is. SO few bad eggs.
I had to give @haileypiperfights.bsky.social editorial feedback once with some critique for a story some years back, and I was bricking it because Hailey is one of my writing idols, and can basically do no wrong in my eyes. This story just needed some discussion. We just had a nice convo about it.
If you invite it, for sure! I can understand not wanting to just be hit with feedback at like 1am on Bluesky when you're in recreational mode or something, but in a professional context, from someone you submitted TO, absolutely.
As an editor AND a writer, I often find myself having to give editorial notes to authors who I know objectively are better writers than me. Good, professional authors realize that editing, and tailoring a story for a given outlet, is a different skill to writing, and they don't lash out about that.
There was one author in particular who is one of my absolute favorite horror authors of all time, who had a rejection some years ago. Has he ever held it against us or even been slightly rude? No. Because that's what professionals do. Would I welcome subs from him again? In a heartbeat.
We also cannot always personally explain our decisions to hundreds of authors a month because again, the NSP is a business and and we have to maximize what we spend our paid time on. You're all incredibly respectful of this, and I am immensely grateful for it.
We have the best interests of two groups in mind; 1) David and the NSP, a company that can't afford to just burn money on stories that will not work on the show. And the authors, selected AND rejected, whose stories we have an obligation to treat with respect.
It's very rare that a story reaches me or Jessica and we reject it because it's a bad story. And I can genuinely count on less than 10 fingers the number of authors who've been rude or abusive about this. Because most of you are grown-ass adult professionals who know we love you regardless.
