How many government programs are tied to numbers that come out of BLS? Cost of living increases on benefits for example. If they start fucking with CPI things will get worse.
This is just the beginning of the danger. So many of the decisions that affect the flow of trillions of dollars through the economy depend on accurate numbers. BLS was just one source of those numbers. But it was one of the most trusted. Not anymore.
There are independent fact collectors as well. Banks don’t rely on just government numbers.
There are lots of fact checkers who comb over these numbers looking for inaccuracies because a mistake could cost literal billions in investments. They will be looking even closer after Trump’s actions. If they find something that smells, they will not be silenced.
And there will be a lot of these fact checkers because billions of dollars in investments decisions depend on these numbers. Banks and Insurance companies will scream bloody murder the first time they find a discrepancy.
I’m certain this is the intent, but it will be harder than he thinks. Hundreds of people are involved in collecting and validating this information. Any attempt to fudge the numbers will be quickly apparent to outside fact checkers.

When the system works, they don’t notice. When they see the price of that system, they think it is wasted money. So they cut the budget. The system falls apart. And then those who cut the budget get upset and demand that someone do something about it. This is the paradox of system administration.

Firing the head of BLS because of bad numbers is an attack on capitalism. Investors cannot make sound business decisions without trustworthy data.

Controversial opinion: not all politicians are bad people. In fact, I think most of them generally mean well.
